Transmission/Transfer Case Adapter Questions

Well, I found the entire Shabang in Denver, trans core, adapter and transfer case...I'll use the guts from the trans, sell the case, sell the transfer case and use the adapter! :) sooo relieved! One less thing to worry about now!

I am finishing up the drawings and info needed to make a new reproduction of the 15629600 adapter...I explored a few different avenues, but as it turns out, the best way to go about this and still make the adapter cost effective may be to use an upgraded high strength ductile iron with a re-design of gusseting where the stock cast iron adapter was known for failing along the base of transfer case mating surface...

So, I have a bit of a dilemma and I need some assistance...

I had my friend in Denver send me the adapter via UPS and as I unpackaged it and threw it into the media blasting cabinet, this is what I found...

The crack goes all the way around the top half of the transfer case side mating surface. It was completely "fixed" with the bronze brazing, but as I understand it, bronze brazing is not a structural weld so this adapter is pretty much worthless...is that correct? The adapter is perfectly square and in fine shape for mock-up use, but I can't really use this one for any sort of actual "in-vehicle duty" can I???

thats a nice paper weight you got there. :sign5:

hope you get the specs you need and get a refund on that pile of crap. :poo:

yes braze is not as strong.

Luckily I got a good 4L80E and NP205 out of it..the adapter was basically free in the end, even though it really was the important piece of the puzzle I was looking for!

At least you got a unit to reproduce.
I know Jimbo* has been in this thread so maybe you can ask him if he would sell you his adapter, he bought a complete set from me, so he might be inclined to sell you the extra he has.
I could probably deliver the one I have here to you if he sells you one.

I know he has told me he bought a package from "someone closer to me that him", but you are way close to me! He did say he was apprehensive about selling me the extra...we will see what he says, I would love to be able to use an OEM piece and not have to reverse engineer one from other materials/methods...

I am not saying he will, saying he might, maybe for the right price.:dunno:
