Hey guys, I've got an issue with my 86 K5 jimmy. here is how the truck sits now: it was a 305, and now its got a replaced 350 block and heads, with an RV cam in it( crate motor from Marshall distributers in Maine) and the stock 305 intake with a Edelbrock 1406 performer carb on it. and headers, its got the 305 distributer still in it, and about 14k on that setup. the issue I'm having is when its hot, it misfires and only runs on 6 cylinders, and if i burp it, it comes out of it, will sit and idle all day long, take it down the road fine, but then all of the sudden it will go back to running real rough, and gets to the point where it shuts off. once its cooled off, it fires right up on choke ( temp here in NH is in the high 40's today) and it runs fine, this problem seems only like its when its hot

so i have new plugs and wires to put in it, (AC Delco replacements.) i haven't had the plugs out, and i haven't found any vacuum leaks (yet). coil was just replaced to get it running, i got the exhaust patched back together, and its better than it was with the bad coil in it, cap and rotor are in good condition.

so what direction do i go with this? find someone to adjust the carb and see if its just way out of adjustment? compression test? just put the plugs and wires on it? timing issue? any help would be awesome, thanx guys!

So I checked everything, wiggled all of the electrical connections, and now it doesn't start at all, what did I do to deserve this?!?lol

Where are your ground wires going from the battery? I have one to the block and one to the alternator bracket.

Mine are the same, to the block and to the alt bracket. My brother said something about a gasket inside the cap, if that is not there it will arc through it.. I've got a new cap and rotor and replacement coil coming tomorrow. So I will take it apart and see what's up and let ya know!

It runs!! Had go to the Autoparts store and half an hour later they found what I needed( that ground spade), put that in with a new cap, rotor, and coil, and it fired up awesome! Thanx for the pic of that terminal Livid4dirt! What I couldn't understand, Is the truck has run so long just fine without that!

Oh it will run without it, for awhile. Until the coil and or wires self destruct. Glad you got it worked out:waytogo:.

ok so now its got a few miles on it....

so yesterday, it ran great, no issues, idled well, accelerated great. went to the gas station, got some beer and called it good, drove it 12 miles.
today, its back to running like crap, not taking gas, back firing, skipping, and dies out. the temps here are in the mid 40's. do i need to change the plugs out for hotter ones? its running the regualar AC Delcos in it. they havent been changed out in a while, should i start there? also when its cold and you set the choke, it seems as if thats not working..ive checked the plug wires and they are tight, not crossed or anything, but they are also old. so what do i check next? HELP! lol

reground your motor i bet a shinny penny your grounds are not up to snuff.

Checked the grounds... Did Not find anything out of the ordinary.. And still does it intermittently. Ran fine yesterday, today it wouldn't idle. Found a bad vacuum line from the carb to the distributer, fixed that and no difference.. Any other ideas?

So new update, changed the plugs and wires, double checked the grounds again, fired the truck up cold and it ran like crap.so a dumb question here, is the distributer supposed to be "off centered" like mine is?ImageUploadedByTapatalk1357965141.103814.jpg Lol I'm out of ideas as to why this thing runs like crap so intermittent!

really no one has any idea? ive been searching for days online to no avail. ive had someone tell me to check the eletronic ignition module under the rotor.. any insight at all?

it doesnt have to be strait, just wether or not its in time is what counts, make sure all your wires are on right and not crossed

Agree with Kain, distributor position is meaningless, as long as the wires are in correct order and rotor hits the cap terminal at the correct time. Twisting distributor is more of a "fine tuning" aspect.

Double/triple check your wiring, make sure you are tracing them correctly, and that you verify you have firing order right in your head. Write it down/tag wires if you have to. No shame in that, it's better to make sure it's right, than THINK it's right and find out later it's not.

So an update thought.... I know the steering column is really loose,( I gotta rebuild it). Any thing in the column that could be causing my problem?
