Tubing Bender - updated

I think the deal with that one is that the die's are specific to that bender only. But I could be wrong.

The one I'm trying to build will work with both JD2 and Protools dies.

I was looking at die costs as they relate to the benders. A die is going to cost up to $245 depending on the company. This guy is asking $200 for any die he has for this bender. 1.75" x 0.120 or (0.096 chrome moly) is the largest tubing it will handle.

as for mounting, I have a couple friends with a bender.. a removed if you really need to remove it option

dig a 2 foot hole

put a 2 1/4" suare tube in a bucket

poor in concret

barry it

for the surface get a cap from home depot that is ment for a fence,

when needed remove cap, stab in your 2 inch bender mount and bend...

place bender and dies near the garage door so you dont get a hurnia carrying it out there:D

and you dont twist the buckit?

I would think that would work better with a square base,

also that would work great in AZ but any place with a frost would have to go deep to keep it from heaving

hmm our dirt breaks most shovels.. most people hee need a trencher to dig for sprinkler line lol

and what the hell is heaving?

8 hours to do 400 feet of trench with a walk behind trencher for a yard sprinkler and drip system. You know the word "F*ck" truly is a word to describe everything, verb, noun, adjective...

Well I ordered one for $299. I'm interested in finding out if I just got f'd or not...

frost heaving, the ground heaves when it freeze so any thing not below the frost line goes up with the frozen ground, and when it thaws, the ground goes down but what ever was in stays up, rocks fence posts, etc.

keep us posted on it! i'm interested in it as well... tho i think i'd rather have a manually operated one - not hydraulic.

Our shop neighbor paid dollars for a manual one. I don't need to buy one anymore at least.

They may have gotten all the dies though. I didn't ask

is that why there are pics of fields in frozen areas that look like a bolder field?

I received the bender today.

Couple things that popped out:
The hydraulic jack is a Harbor Freight special: 8 Ton Bottle Jack $22.99
Very thin square metal
No springs for the return

Everything appears pretty tight

I will try this thing this weekend. I am going start to build up a bumper this weekend with this.

I knew I wasn't buying a JD2 or other quality bender. I would expect it to bend 90 degrees. I got close - twice. I got to around 88 on the first and then tried again and BANG went a bolt on the jack to die mount. It bent the support when one side let go. This POS is going back.:mad::mad:

I was bending 1.75 x 0.120 HREW. This is the limit of this thing. It should have worked.

Anyone know what grade bolt this is? It has a BJE marking. Everything I found indicates a grade 2. Attachments aren't working for me right now. I'll try again in a few minutes.

EDIT - PICS BELOW

Build a male reciever tube piece that won't move. Not too hard, I can show ya how.

I emailed the company today. They responded promptly. I am VERY impressed with the customer service. They responded with this:

Yes, we will refund the original shipping cost as long as you pay the return shipping.

After reviewing the photos it appears the Jack Plate was drilled wrong for the jack. There should be no overhang of the jack plate out from the jack on the back side of the jack. This is what would not allow the bender to complete a full 90 degree bend and this is what caused the binding of the die and jack plate resulting in the breaking bolt and bending of the jack plate. We can send you a new jack plate if you would like and provide instructions on how to drill it correctly so the bender will work properly if you'd like or you can return it.

I'm using this one http://www.tubetek.net/ Cost a little bit more and it's manual (Should be easy to make Hyd) I bent my cage with it and no problems. There was some talk on Pirate about how slow he was getting them out. I had mine in less than two weeks.

Does it come with a handle and frame/post to mount it, or did you have to fab one up?

I was looking at this a while back:

$1000 shipped to the door, air over hydraulics and 4 dies.
