So i know i've started liek 5 threads to discuss what is going through my head for my next truck.

I really hate to see my truck go, but my parents want to get me something with airbags.....so i really want the perfect setup for what i need before i am willing to part with the blazer.

Here's what i've recently been mulling over.

I really want a 3/4 ton, with decent gas mileage. That leaves me with a 96-99 3/4 ton burb, wiht a diesel, or a 350. Both are rare motors. Plus, when i look at colors and options i want, im practically looking for teh impossible truck.

I found a 99 2500 burb with a 454, 48,000 miles, for pretty cheap. Color, options i want. What would it cost to buy a Vortec 350, complete? Im assuming none of the FI stuff from teh 454 will swap to teh 350. Then, what could i get for a used vortec 454 wiht that # of miles?

What type of shop would i look for to do this swap, and how much woudl it cost?

Short of running across the perfect burb, i think this might pencil in.
I like the idea of getting 15-17mpg out of the 350, and i really won't be hauling very heavy trailers. I mainly want the 3/4 ton for the durability of the drivetrain, and the 4l80e trans.

You'll probably spend more swapping in the 350 then you will save on gas. There is alot that needs to be changed. Unless you find a wreck to strip parts off of it will be real $$$. Around here the 350 is more popular then the 454. I had looked for two months before I found the 454 I had, and I had to drive 2 hours to get it. I was able to get 14-16 highway mileage out of it, and it had 4.10's. If all you find is a 454, just get one with 3.73's and you should do better. Remember the Burb. is heavy, and a bigger engine has to work less to move it and hopefully if you're light on the throttle will give you better mileage.
 
Ok, thats good to hear. I get 14-16 out of my 94 TBI 350 in teh blazer, guess that motor is getting tired. Now is just need to check out what gears this one has.

If i do it soon, theres a guy aroudn here selling a 96 vortec 350 out of a truck that was tboned........for only like $1200 wiht 80k on it. So that might work too.......but if its not going to be a big difference, maybe i'll try out the 454 and swap it when i need to.

forget the 350 burb Idea cuz you'll have no power and **** mileage. the 454 vortecs aren't that bad you could get easily get 13-15 MPG I would think the 350 powered burb would get less MPG.
Why the push to an Airbag truck????? IMO in a truck this big the Airbag would do little for you . exept give you a broke nose and a nasty chemical burns on your arms and face

The push towards an airbag is basically that my sister totaled a Grand cherokee....and the airbags saved her life. Yes, im a better driver......but if some idiot hits me, airbags will help. Plus, from a safety standpoint, my truck has some other issues.

I went and lookd at the burb today, and it is in SWEET shape. Its a 454 with 4.10's and stock tires. My gut is telling me something like 14 mpg. But yah, now i gotta get over the emotional trauma of selling my first truck :(
 
Air bag be damned if YOU like your truck then keep it. my burb has 4.10's btw

I think what he's trying to say is that you're an adult, do what you want.
 
oh, alright.

As much as i am an adult, I'm in school, not working full time, and my parents are paying the bills. They own this truck, and will own the next one.

So yah, they have a lot of say in things until i am really on my own.

cool, good to know im not the only one.

Decided to hold out for the 2500 burb with the 350 i'm looking for.....
 
They're out there, I was in the market a while back and I saw a few of em here and there.
 
I'd really go with a Bigblock burb you won't be happy with the power output of the 350 it will most likely be slower and have worse fuel mileage than your current blazer even if you do get a vortec equiped truck
 
We had a 96 1500 350 burb and it had enough power for day to day stuff.

Does the 3/4 ton chasis/transmission really suck that much power?

I've got one with high miles im gonna go drive soon just for a reference....


Plus, wiht the 1500 vortec, aren't guys getting like 17mpg?
 
if your foot is out of it and on the highway its doable. My 97 C2500 got 17mpg... once... I got 14 mpg last tank. I was very proud of that. Its normally more like 10. But I have a heavy foot. Thats why I have my Saturn. I can be full throttle for 300 miles and get 29mpg
 
yeah but those trucks have 3.73 or 3.42 gears and are quite a bit lighter then a 3/4 ton burb' If you really want a burb' then you better plain to get 15-16 mpg or less regardless of what motor it has. They are big and heavy trucks all I'm saying is 1-2 mpg that you MIGHT save by going with a smallblock is not worth the power differance . plus towing the same weight the bigblock will get better mpg than the smallblock because it won't be working as hard
