About 2 months ago I asked for tips on refurbishing my center console from my 71 Blazer.I took the suggestions given and went to work(I'm a slow worker) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Here are the results.I think it turned out AWESOME!!!!
Thanks to those who gave tips.

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

Do you guys have to "sign up" to Image Station to view the rest of the pic's
If so I can just post them here.
Some-one let me know.

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

Yea, you must have to. Or at least, I am not smart enough to figure out how to see more than just that one picture.

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

O.k. I'll post em here.

The bottom had a hole and a major crack that went the length of the base of the console.

This is where the lid sits on.This cross piece was busted in half.I used J.B. Weld to fix all the cracks in the console.I bent up some 3/4" aluminium and rivitted it in place to help support this area.

Here the lid has been stripped to the orig. finish and is ready for paint.

I used 26 Gauge galvinized sheet metal to make plates for the bottom and the inside bottom. It covers the hole and will help to add stregth to the base.

The bend came out real well.

Here is the inside base plate cut and fitted.

Here is that plate inside the console.

painting things up with the black dye/paint I used

the bottom.I rivitted the two base plates together, sandwiching the fiberglass bottom of the console between them.

the orig. wire that limits how far back the lid goes was missing.I went to my local hardware store and picked up some chain.Looks good and works well.

the chemicals I used. The majority of the 2 layers of paint were taken off with the middle can of aircraft remover(bought at Walmart)It worked well.I got it down to the orig finish useing Acetone and a toothbrush. The can on the left is the dye/paint I used(bought at my local auto paint supply). The can on the right is call Molecubond.I used it to redo my sunvisors.I could have used it on the console as well.

my cup holder was boken in 3 places.Again J.B.Weld was used. Here I've sanded down the excess J.B.Weld.

spraying the cup holder with the same dye/paint I used on the rest of the console

The finished product

I purchased some clips for my "D"cell Mag Light at OSH(Orchard Supply and Hardware).I used existing holes in the back to mount the clips to the console.

And that's basically it.I've got more pic's but this give you a basic idea of what I did.

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

Cool deal! I had to refurbish mine, but it was so far gone that I bought another console (thinking that it was good). Found out that a lot of stuff was broken on the other one too, but everything that was broken on one was solid on the other.

BTW, I used black oval head sheetmetal screws and J-nuts to hold the cup holder into the upper console to try to make it look as factory as possible.

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

nice work...does the rest of your truck look the same?

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

where did the cupholder come from? my 71 has only the two slots for seatbelts and an ashtray in the center. I want to re-do mine. it is in pretty good shape now but it has a crack in teh side and teh hinges are pretty loose.
great job on yours by the way!!!!

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

The cup holders and the console were in the truck when I bought it.The cup holders must have been swapped in to the 73 and up design at some point.
TONYP,at present my truck looks like this

The paint and body are being done now.
Thanks though. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

The cup holders were part of the '73-up consoles. The console I bought was supposedly out of a '76.

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

LMC truck has the choice of w/ or w/out cup holders for '69-'72. I just assumed that ment they were available that way from the factory. They only sell them as whole consoles and they cost $140+ if memory serves correctly. I will probably use an aftermarket one designed for a J**p with locking top. Has any one seen one with a compartment for a CB that can be locked up and kept dry?

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

Bob,

Those bodywork pics look "eerily" like what mine's going through right now....

I stripped out the seats, and have been removing layers of old paint (some original, some not) and welding up about 40 holes in the bedrails, floor and bedsides, that were either useless....or from old rollcages, weird mounts, etc.

I have started doing some "small" repairs on the floor (under the front seats) as confidence-builders.....just simple 5 x 7" patches to replace some metal that was too bent and rusty to deal with. So far I'm pretty proud of myself.....I grafted in a fresh piece of 16GA metal, ground down the welds and it now blends perfectly with the original floor!!!!

I took a few shots of it tonight, but I'll prolly post them in the "CANCER SUPPORT GROUP" thread in the next day or so.

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

Greg,16 gauge, that's pretty stout stuff. You wheel that thing all the time though so I guess the "stouter"the better(is that a word?)
I've been REAL lucky. The body is in GREAT condition. We're taking it down to the metal and the only substantial rust is in the areas you guys have been talking about in the "CANCER SUPPORT GROUP".
Example #1-behind the rear wheels.Zero rust.Hard to believe after 32 years.

Here is the cancer though.worse on the drivers side that the passenger. This is the drivers side.

Anyway,I'll post a link to all the pics when I get it done. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

Bobk...sweet work on the console. Mine is in pretty good shape, but real dirty. I am going to follow your lead on this. Thanks for all the pics and details.

I also need to clean the rear interior vinyl side panels. I tried some standard kitchen/outdoor cleaning products, but does anyone know of a product that really works well for this? also...the door panels need some love.

Planning on getting some pics of the rig this weekend and will post ASAP. Exterior and mechanical resto is done. Came out great.

Thanks,
BigO

Re: Update on refurbishing my center console(PIC\'S)

I have a custom made center console. I had it made at radio shack. I could have done it myself, but I really like the job they did on it. I have pics (not real good ones, but pics) in the link below. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
