Was wondering what the downsides are to this thought?

For my thoughts it would be used as a temporary brake if/when a situation came up I would need to get out of the vehicle, on excessively angled terrain that would not be suitable to use the Park function of the trans.
Such as a stuck which you would not want the vehicle to roll, but needed to exit to use the winch.
I realize it needs electric to energize the solenoid valve, and without it the solenoid valve would not close.

I am too lazy to search for the thread from 2 months ago. I us one. Wore out 2 pricey units. Now I just have a ball valve in the rear line inside the cab.

Even better...no electric needed.

As long as you're only using it in the instance that you described it would be fine but DO NOT use it as a parking brake that would be left on for any length of time. A Mico lock would be better though as then there is no eletrical involved.

My ball valve has sat for a week and held. But that was an accident. I do not like to leave any e brake on for long periods.

Works very well, the electrical draw is small and would take weeks to kill the battery. Like any parking brake, it's only a safety net and won't necessarily work all the time (I've seen many mechanical parking brakes fail, broken cables, stripped gears, etc).

Always park your rig with the tires pointing away from people! Electric locks work well and are cheap, I like mine a lot.

They don't work AT ALL if your battery is dead. :D

That was my thought too, hence only using it while in a particular short time frame while needing to get out of the vehicle as stated above.
I do like the manual valve though...

Here, you wont get an inspection sticker with one--vehicles emergency brakes have to be mechanical, independant of the hydraulic system that operates the regular brakes...

--too bad 90% of all e-brake cables here are so rusty they snap if they ever get used--either that or they are seized tight,or fail to release after being applied....I bet most vehicles e-brake cables never move if it has an automatic tranny thanks to "Park"..
I'd rather have a manual line-loc! ..
..

Inspection????? Rust????? What are these things you speak of?

Nice to be in a state that does not have these issues.

Mich has no inspections either....

We have no annual inspections here in BC...however, if you get pulled over and the cop feels there might be a safety issue with your ride he can issue you a VI (vehcle inspection citation) that requires you to have your ride inspected by a certified shop within 14 days. If it is not 100% to the vehicle code here, your insurance will be voided and not be re-issued until it's brought into compliance. Generally these get issued to people with bad attitude problems. The rest of us get fix it tickets, usually for one or two obvious things like mudflaps.

It's the number one reason I avoid a really bright flashy paint job, and drive like a sane person. It's tough to stay 100% compliant with a lifted truck.

I've had a pair Jeg's brand electric line-locks on mine for years (one for front, one for rear) and they work good. I don't use it for long-term parking but rather as a supplement to the parking pawl when stopping on the trail.
