i recently did some top end work, ie. cam, lifters, intake, timing chain, rebuilt carb, and valve springs. which is where my problem began.
after installing new valve springs and stem seals(o-rings) the motor smokes. i inspected a suspect cylinder and found the o-ring stretched out down by the guide!
    what to do?
umbrella seals any good for this problem?
    which ones do i use?
    early 70's small block 350.
    thank you,

Sounds like you put the o-ring on before you put the retainer on. What you have to do is put the retainer on, then compress the spring, put the o-ring in the lowest groove, the replace the keepers and release the tension on the spring. If you put the o-ring on first, the retainer will push it down when you compress the spring. Hope this helps.
