my block is black, my heads are orange, my headers are black as welll with a mix of rust..
mine is rust colored... 
I paint all of my engines black. There is a reason behind it as well. Heat is attracted to black so painting an engine black helps to draw heat from the engine.
I would hope that even if an engine is painted black that you would be able to notice that you had a leak somewhere (assuming you had a leak).
