What does PTO refer to?

Think about this for a second, if a PTO could only work when the truck is in motion or in gear how does a wrecker/rollback use its winch to pull the car up? To engage the PTO on manual you push the clutch in and put the tranny in neutral then engage the PTO. When you let up on any manual trans clutch in neutral the main shaft is still spinning.. So with the PTO engaged and the clutch out the mainshaft drives the PTO instead of the output gears....

that's what i thought was pretty wierd about my thinking regarding this. thanks for the explanation.

so i've been considering the aforementioned invention quite a bit recently, and realized that i don't have a d@mn clue what i'm working with. :D it would seem to me that such a contraption could only be run off of a truck in motion (or at least with wheel spin), as this is the only time the gears in a manual tranny or t-case are moving. is this correct?

that might limit my imagination. :( but its ok - i'll still invent something super kick @ss, so don't fret, be assured, the gears in my head are spinning. i will have something which will make you want to give me money (as i know you are all so eager to do). :haha:
You got that right, just give me your address so I can send you money..., I want in on whatever you invent.
Oh wait, thats right your gonna give me a free one 'cause I went to your wifes highschool before she was born. Thank's, I feel really OLD now.

so how common are the things on t-cases? specific models and years?

hey man, i didn't determine the year you were born, i just reminded you. don't kill the messenger, as they say. :wink1:

I've had lots of thoughtsof putting a PTO to use in some cool sort of way. Just haven't come up with anything spectacular, yet. Maybe you could use it to run a generator motor, for some 120V power? Or how about a water pump, with the output water flowing through heat exchanger plumbed into the vehicles cooling system for a hot trail shower? Or an air pump for OBA, or use it to run some farming implements like a PTO on a tractor does? Or..... I'm with ya, colby, go fer it! And sign me up for one of whatever you come up with.

i thought about the oba set up too. :) i think i want something more crazy than that - i'm also not sure an oba set up on the pto would be as economical as can be done otherwise. we'll see what i come up with. :D

Not sure what your going to do but you might consider butting in another throttle also. All of our trucks with PTOs have a knob throttle on them also that way you can run the PTO faster and not have to be in the truck.

Wanna get crazy? How bout a PTO that operates the crank of a Gatling gun mounted on the hood?

PTO winches, etc. can be found on EBAY. Go look at PTO stuff in an equipment rental yard or const company.

now there's an option. my brother works for dillon aero down in AZ - he could probably get me a smokin deal on one of those. :D
