I have a couple trucks that I have bought over the years and looked at that give standard equipment gears instead of the ratio. Is there a chart or listing on what standard gears for what years and what models?

I'll venture a few uncertain guesses...

1/2 ton - up to mid 80's = 3.08, late 80's+ = 3.42
light duty 3/4 ton = 3.42
hd 3/4 ton = 3.73
1 ton = 3.73

These are just guesses based on junk I've seen over the years but I feel fairly confident about them. Also, I've seen more 4.10 1 tons than 3.73 but you are asking about base model ratios. Of course "standard" could vary from year to year, it would take some time but searching Dremu's brochure collection would tell you for sure.

My old 84 had a standard gear of 2.73, along with a 305, 700 and 208 case, 31" tires. If it had enough power, probly set land speed records.

That was what I was guessing also. I can't read any online brochures that I have found. The print is too small to make out.

Call This number 888-467-6853, and get a restoration packet free to those in the US. Make sure you have your V.I.N. nearby and of course the year of the vehicle(why they cant tell what year it is by the vin is a mystery). I havent had enough time to get mine for my blazer, but it had one on my Monte SS . There is just about every specification and build information in there, as well as a list of available options and RPO codes. To my knowledge its for all Gm cars and trucks except pontiac , for pontiac you have to contact the POntiac Historical Society and its 55 dollars if i recall correctly(thats why i dont have one for my 84 GP)

I don't think there is any "standard" about gears. I have seen the same year and model all with different gearing options from the factory.

RPO codes list standard gears instead of number but will give gear number for optional gears. The burb I just bought has standard gears according to rpo code.

I'm not completely sure what you mean. I think you're saying that there is a "standard" but someone may have order an option and the RPO code would show the optional ratio?

I have the window sticker for my blazer in front of me and there are no RPO codes on the sticker but it does say mine came with 3.73's for $38.00 more but it doesn't say anywhere what would have come "standard".

on the older rpo lists where it says the individual option number and a description, like paint color whatever, instead of "rear axle - 3.08", it would say "rear axle - standard"

The "standard" ratio on my '89 Burb was 3.73, but the PO changed them to 4.10 which is one reason why I bought it b/c it works perfect with 35s. :wink1:

But you can't always go by the RPO.

The 'standard gear' in my '79 K30 is 4.56, because it has the Camper Special package, DRW, and originally had a 350. If it were SRW, the 'standard gear' would have been 4.10 ratio. In short, the standard gear is often based off of other options.

I know this thread is about a month old but I just bought a GM Facts book from Lawrence and while browsing through it I found a section in the "Powerteams" section and it says what ratio was standard and what the options were. This book only covers 1989 light duty truck so I can't say for other years but here is the info I have for 1989.

1989 Blazer with a 5.7L gas engine, 700R4 trans came standard equipped with 2.73 gears, the 3.08, 3.42, and 3.73's were optional BUT the 3.73's required the Z82 trailering or NA6 emission EXCEPT California did not require the Z82.

I love this kinda info...

That being said, my 79 k5 came with 3.73 factory... 350, t350, tc unknown(PO swapped in t400/205), 10b/12b...

My 88 V30 came with 4.56 from the factory... 454, t400, np205, 60/14 srw with gov bomb...

oh yeah, ive had two 87 k30s completely identical up to the gears, and one had 3.73s and the other had 4.56 both gov locks.

Factory versus STANDARD or OPTIONAL is completely different. My 1989 Blazer for instance came with 3.73's from the factory and i have the window sticker that says so along with the RPO code but STANDARD gearing for 1989 was 2.73's.
