What makes a 1 ton?

[ QUOTE ]
Back in the 70's burb did come from the factory with a D60, but they were special order military ONLY rigs. Was never even an option for the general public.

I'm gonna call BS until you can supply some sort of proof...there's a camo 'burb up here on one ton diff's, but I have no illusions that it was ever factory.

Like others on here have already said a 1/2 ton generally comes with a dana 44 (or 10 bolt???) up front and a 10 or 12 bolt in the rear (I believe you may be able to get a 14 bolt nf rear though as well????), a 3/4 will come with a dana 44 or dana 44 corporate front and a 12 bolt, 14 bolt nf, or 14 bolt ff rear, a 1 ton comes with a dana 60 front and a 14 bolt ff rear or a dana 70 or 70hd rear (if it's a dually). The other differences are in spring (leaf) packs a 1/2 generally has less than 6 leafs in the rear, a 3/4 has around 6 or more, and a 1 ton has 8 or more. IMO there are differences in the frame as well.
Does anyone know why they call military trucks 1 and 1/4 ton? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Just how the military classifies it. They call an M1009 a 3/4 ton even though it has 3.08 geared 10 bolts front and rear.

I call BS too. No GM trucks got a Dana 60 front before they offered it in '77. Of course, anything can be modified after it leaves the assembly line - perhaps even at the dealer's garage /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My buddy has a '76 "5/4-ton" (ex-Canadian military). Its a strange truck. He has Collector's plates on it too, so it is authentic.
- 9400lbs GVW
- 350/TH350/NP203 combo
- D44 front with bolt-on truss
- 14FF rear with 13x3.5" drums
- Hydroboost
- 4.56 ratio

The military takes the rated GVW, and subtracts the "outfitted" net weight. What's left is ~2500lbs available for payload.

The best explanation I've heard for the 1/2, 3/4, and 1-ton designations is that this is the amount of weight the truck can withstand to carry for the intended service life of the vehicle.

For example, a 1-ton dually is rated at 10,000lbs, and only weighs say 5000lbs, so you can really carry 2.5 tons - but the truck would wear out prematurely if loaded to that level continuously.

What makes a 1-ton?

I built a 3/4-ton 14FF up with 1-ton drums and put that in my Burb last year. Just this month I put in the 1-ton front brakes, spindles, and coils (thanks Rene /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif ) Now its a 1-ton... according to me!

No.

The ratings came from long ago when that's all a truck could carry (1/2, 3/4, or 1 ton) and have evolved into the trucks of today.

A truck rated for 10,000 lbs GVWR will carry that weight continuously and indefinitely as that is what it is designed to do.

I consider my blaze a 1 ton, d44HD front axle, huge axle tubes(same as my d60)BIG closed knuckle(with all the weak spots modified)also sporting D60 king pins, I'm not sure right now of shaft diameter, but i placed them side by side with a d44 shaft from a jeep, and mine ere quite a bit thicker know for sure there are 1350 ujoints at both ends of that axle. the only parts the same as the d44 was the end of the shaft that splines into the carrier Not to mention the spool in the pumpkin, custom made cross over steering knuckle and 1.5 inch cold rolled steel bar, (NOT TUBE) for steering arms(gonna be pretty tough to bend that stuff) and 3/4 inch heim joints. this thing kicks butt /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif

If you have 1350 wheel joints I wouldn't mind seeing them, I've never seen a 1350 wheel joint before.

D60 uses 1480 series wheel joints though.
