Ok, so I need advice/ opinions :doah:

I have my budget k5 project. http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=292854. I've already picked up a d60 for it and went and scored a matching 14b yesterday. While I was there the guy shows me a 86 K30 454/400/205 truck he has, no bed , minimal rust , all stock, he has and is going to sell. So I start thinking about wether I should stay with my K5 or go for the 30 ??? I haven't touched the K5 yet, been collecting parts, so just for the heck of it I threw the K5 on CL for what I would need to really make me go for the 30, and in less then 2 hours I've got 4 people that want it :eek1:

So, for a wheeler , beater , multi use rig , what should I do??

If I go 30, I'm thinking a ORD style tube bed and shorter wheelbase.

It's really up to you and your ype of wheeling.
If you need a short wheelbase to go where you want, you can't beat a K5 on tons, but if your trails can take or deman a longer whelbase then K30 would be better.
A K30 is definitely faster to get done since it's pretty much ready to go, but in some states a truck will cost more than a K5 to register and insure and unless you really need a bed, it doesn't make sense.
I have both so I don't have to choose.:doah:

If I go K30, I will shorten it down to short bed wheelbase, and in MD it will be tagged historic so that's the same price no matter the specs.
It is a good bit more solid then the K5, and I've always wanted a 454 ( about the only one I haven't owned yet ) .

I originally thought K5 since it would be a better family rig, but it will be at least 5 or so years before the whole family will be ready for any camping trips, that is if my daughter is in to it at all.

I'm keeping the plow rig from the K5, and since I already have a 60/14 combo, I would sell the ones in the K30 and possibly end up making a few bucks on the whole deal :D

You really want my "expert" opinion? :deal:

I have never had a k5 but I like alot of things about my k30. Of course the axles but there are times the length really helps, then there are times the length really hurts. The 454 in mine makes up for some of the gearing. Going 39.5s soon and hoping the low end grunt of the 454 will still pull ok till the doubler happens. I have thought about getting a k5 for the axles but for now I am staying with a a long wheel base.

The k30 frame is a big plus. Especially with somthing that's going to get beat/twisted on the trail. They are quite abit thicker, and taller than the k5 frame.

Imagine you didn't own your K5. Then imagine that you also saw it for sale, along with that K30, and both happened to even be the exact same price.

Which one would you buy? There's your answer.

Thats almost a rhetorical question. :doah::haha:

Buy the K30 then lock them both in a 2 car garage with soft music wine and candle light. Go away for the weekend and 9 monthes later you'll have the perfect hybrid.:D
