I am thinking about switching from a 700r4 to a 5 speed on my truck project. Idealy i'de also like to find a divorced NP205 to use in conjunction with it. What are my options, the engine should be over 400hp, its a 400sb with MPFI. The truck is an 87 1/2 ton that is getting a 12bolt and dana44 upgrade, i only plan on running a fat 33" tire. Thanks a lot for any help.

for that much power, you will need a nv4500... lots of info out there on swapping em into just about everything you can imagine. Also can use the short 2wd GM version for the divorced case thing

Thanks, i will look into that. whwen i get a few more posts under my belt i will post up some pics. i tried to last nite 2 times but to no avail, i guess i needed more posts or something. soon. I had planned to keep this auto, but if it wont be too bad to drop in a stick, it will be nice for gearing. Plus rowing gears is just plain fun.

i plan on beefing up the 12bolt and d44 axles before putting them under the truck. i didnt want to go with a 14bolt and d60 as its more weight than i want to deal with, i dont plan on running real big tires, or wheeling it hard. Mostly gonna be a driver/light wheeling/towing rig. i figure it would be more worthwhile to spend the money on the 12bolt and 44 axles than just the 10bolts, i have almost no money in them now, and they are clean and un abused.

I would look into a semi floating 14 bolt of dana 60 for the rear if you plan on towing much. You can find them in 6 lug and they are a direct bolt in. They will be stronger and probably cheaper then a built a 12 bolt

towing duty's will be minor, a few quads now and then, and a lawn mower from time to time. I picked up the 12bolt and d44 for only $300 and this was with new leaf springs, and a rock solid blazer frame i plan on using to help me box in the frame sometime. I looked into the14bolt and d60, but they are heavier than i'de realy like, i could probably live with the 10bolts but i just want to go with what i have. They are clean axles that just need paint realy, but i'm going to gut them and replace mostly evreything, eventualy. Thanks for the input, but i dont use my truck half as hard as some of you guys do, wheeling will cinsist of hills, and a bit of mud, nothing major. the spring perches appear to measure the same width as the 10 bolts under the truck, they are on a 74 blazer frame i believe, that has a 66 chevelle frame welded on top of it =P

i expect to throw at least a grand in the 700r4 to beef it up, and labor to install evreything. I have acess to a couple junk yards so hopefully they will turn something up i can use for a reasonable price. I know it wont be as easy as bolting it up, and go, but i expect it to be a project that will take a good bit of time and money, but that is fine with me. Mainly i am looking into it for a but of gearing adjustability compared to what i could use with the 700. I am also hoping a nice 5 speed swap will yield a bit of an edge for gas mileage as the engine i built will run on 91 otcane.

If you check out my ck5 blog you can get an idea of the costs of the nv4500 swap. It'll be just a bit more than a grand. ;)
