So the title asks. The vent in the lower door panels. Do I need it?

Thanks

( Sorry, POS Photobucket not letting me re size the pic )

If you are removing the lower door panels I might want them.

In some vehicles, its an equalization vent.
Lets the pressure equalize when you slam the door, and makes it a little easier to close.
Some early German cars, Volkswagen and Mercedes, you had to slam extra hard or open a window.

I still see it in some cars and trucks even today. Its easier to close a door if a window is open.

Awful lots of "Air space" in the Burbs :waytogo: I'm thinking I should be fine deleting the fronts if that's the case.

Guess I could go tape up a vent and see what happens. Thanks again

If you pull that panel off you will see the door is louvered. If it was just covered with carpet I'm sure it would be ok.

I know on newer vehicles they use a variety of methods to make sure the pressure inside the car doesn't become too great when shutting doors. I agree, as "leaky" as these vehicles are, I'm not sure they are necessary for that purpose.

I *might* believe that they are so the doors "breathe" and don't rot out from moisture being retained. The little drain holes at the bottom of the door do tend to get plugged up fairly easily. If the window seals and various "covers" are in place under the door panel, the door won't breathe well at all.

In high school, a friend of mine slammed the door in his K5 and shattered the back window. But this was not "normal" door closing by any means.

It helps with the moisture inside the doors that always happens because the outer window seals always leak, i personally wouldnt plug it, blocking it with carpet is probably ok, but it will "help" prevent the door from rotting out

This is what my father told me as well. If you remove those, water turns to airborne moisture more (like humidity) inside your door, which tends to cause things to rot faster.

Now, with our trucks being so old, it may not make a big difference, but I'd leave it if you live anywhere rainy.

Yeah, you need a functional drain hole at the bottom, but that's not enough to let it fully dry, I'm sure. I doubt it helps a lot with relieving the air pressure since it's inside the door seal and only the drain hole is outside.

But isn't there another vent right outside the seal? You can see part of it on the right sight of the pic...

The vent Stays :D

Thanks for all the replies

No, not quite finished, the vent isn't centered, it isn't secured yet. yada yada

(I still cant figure why my pics wont down size :doah: Sorry!)

You don't like it!?

My truck is pretty much blacked out so I thought it would look bitchn with the Marooon interior :waytogo:

Looks good to me.

On the topic of door vents have you guys noticed some new cars crack the windows when you open the doors? My uncle's GT Mustang does it and when you close the door it puts the windows back up. Pretty trick.
