For me,I always wanted a Muncie 4 speed M-22 "Rock Crusher" tranny in a 4wd GM truck--Advanced Adapters once had a kit to adapt one to a NP-205,not sure if they still have that available or not...

I like manual trannies, but the SM465 was more suited for a dump truck or school bus, than a street driven 4x4..the no synchro first "creeper" gear is great for off road crawling, but pretty useless in street use,and the wide jumps in ratios between second and third made for poor acceleration...

Now you can swap in an NV4500 fro a later truck, but I have heard they have some "issues" too,not as rugged as the old stuff was..and they are pretty hard to find and costly even used with high mileage..

I was looking thru an old Jegs catalog and saw the Richmond 6 speed trannys, and the Doug-Nash 5 speeds, and thought how cool would that be,to have one of those behind a 6.2 or a gas engine, coupled to a divorced NP-205...It would take some doing, but I bet it wouldn't be that hard to assemble such a driveline...

Anyone else have any ideas for the "ultimate" driveline??..

big block or well build 383 with nv4500 and doubler with rockwells and ram assist 4 wheel steering.so pretty much would like to have the gravedigger sittin in my driveway otherwise.haha.i really like my 465 in my truck.with the right gearing and all it does real well.i generally dont go over 60 mph and i have a mildly built 350 that pushes thru 2nd and 3rd pretty well for my uses.the only thing ive broke on that or the 205 is the power sleeve in between the 2 got stripped.granny is nice for crawling as well.im sure its not ideal for some people but its worked well for 40 years and hopefully will for anether 40.

An SM465 with a Ranger overdrive in front of it, with an NP203/NP205 doubler behind it. The NP205 twin sticked, so you end up with five shifters.

AMG twin turbo 6.5, TKO 600 6 speed, Atlas 4.3, Greg's 9"/MOG hybrid axles.

Where is that lottery win I so richly deserve/need/want? :haha:

In thinking that I enjoy driving my K5 everyday plus the minimum 2 hour highway drive to the nearest wheeling spot. I like to build my stuff so that it can be used everyday kinda like the factory intended.

LS 6.0, for decent power and reliability.
Built 700R4/4L60E, for OD. Considered an NV4500 swap but the ease of use of an auto while off road wins out in my book.
Atlas t-case, simple 2 gear I think, maybe a 3 gear.

My dream drivetrain is exactly that a dream.

A diesel, that is as light as the 6.2/6.5, with the power of a modern diesel. Lets say 350 HP and 800 lbs ft of torque.

A 7 speed trans with the top gear being a .50 overdrive sequential shift trans of course.

Of course I would mate it to an Atlas 4 speed case.

for axles some sort of portal for sure

Now what would I put in a truck that exists today, a 6.5TD that has been modded a bit(a lot), a 4l80 still a 4 speed atlas and still portals of some sort

12v cummins, approx 450hp and 950ftlbs
allison
205/241 doubler
one tons with 5.38s and detroits
40" boggers.

tell me i can't make it, i dare ya

Ultimate depends on which truck you'd be building, too.

Crawler, daily driver, all purpose, etc.

For my all purpose driver, the truck would have to be an '81 to '87 SWB K10 for the weight factor.
Swap the axles out for either 3/4 or 1 ton, no preference as long as they're not the stock 1/2 tons.
Motor would have to be any BBC, preferrably larger displacement. New crate engines are a plus but who can afford one?
Tranny would have to be the 4500 with the lower first gear if sticking with a manual. Automatic would see the 4L80E.
Transfer case would be the Atlas but not sure which range though. Depends on axle gearing. I chose the Atlas because the weight of the SWB K10 is still light enough that it will work perfectly with the Atlas.
No Doubler. The Atlas will take care of those low ranges. The whole idea here with the K10 and single cases is WEIGHT. Which is why I'd probably stick with 3/4 ton axles instead of 1 tons.

Another wet dream setup would be 502 Ram Jet, 4L80E and an Atlas. But if this setup was to go into a K30 or other heavier truck, I'd replace the Atlas for the tried and true 205.

If there was to be a monster truck involved in this wet dream, I'd go with the largest displacement BBC that I could get Bill Mitchell Hardcore Racing to build. Then stuff that with a competition built Power Glide tranny. Hook that to a Pro-Fab transfer case and that'll be the monster all day long.

In a bobbed and 4-linked K-30 I'll take Cummins/Allison/Atlas/One Tons sitting on 40 inch rubber. Does Santa look at these threads?

6bt/allison/klune-v/twin sticked 205/heavily shaved 14 bolts front and rear... put all that **** in a civic and i'd still drive it. :D:D:D
