Where did you stash the ECM?

I'm looking around for a place to stick my ECM out of sight in my 83 K5. I thought behind the glove box on the ductwork might be possible, but it's really tight. M harness is not perfect and takes a few inches to neck down into the wire loom, so it's not quite as compact as the factory probably was.

Above the ductwork and stuff might work, but there is some other box there (don't know what it is, posted another thread about that).

Ideas?

Remove the other ECM and put your TBI ECM in it's place, that's where they are mounted from the factory. In 1983 you would have had an ECM for the ESC and the CCC.

I saw that and it looked perfect, until it wasn't. The plastic thing it sits in blocks the connectors in a major way. Did you hack a bunch of plastic away on the connector end? It looks to me like you'd need to hack all the way into some of the structural (curved) part too.

I thought they were the same size? You may just look for one from a 1987 truck or 1987 to 1991 Blazer/Suburban or four door dually.

The holder/box is the same size, but the thing that was in there before had a tiny connector compared to the new ECM. Yeah, a newer one might work, or maybe a California emissions vehicle... Or maybe I'll just velcro it.

I've got one mounted on the wall to hold the ECM for my test bench, one end is cut down to clear the 2 plugs for ecm. If that's all it takes trim it down.

Has anyone actually mounted a TBI ECM in an early 80's K5? I cut the plastic thing down quite a bit to clear the connectors, but now I'm seeing that the metal mount in the truck also interferes with the connectors. This is turning into a major frustration.

I seem to have two threads on this topic now, but here's the pic:

That white mounting box looks near identical to the one I have here mounted on the wall next to my test bench which came out of 1989 Suburban.

But your ECM seems to be sitting down into the mount a little further. So I measured mine. Under the ECM on the white bracket is there six small spacers about 13/32 high?

If not, if you turn your ECM over you gain about 5/32 more room on plugs.

If that's not enough you need the newer white mount.

Well, there were some ridges running down the side walls of the plastic box. They looked like they would slide into the notches on the side of the ECM, but then they actually didn't line up. I had to cut two of them off to get it to seat in there at all. Otherwise it would stick half way out on one side only.

If I spaced it out, I'm not sure the metal strap would fit any more. It's bending quite a bit as it is. The bending is good to a point.

I velcro'd it behind the glove box with "industrial" velcro last night and it's not going anywhere. I have it with the EBL connector down, so I can get at that easily too. I think I'll just leave it there. I'll snap a pic once it's all wired up.

I've velcroed then in when gravity is holding them even in off roaders and been fine.

Even though that white mount looks the same, from what your saying it is differant for the 1227747.
