Why do they even make 315/75 tires?

How come they even make 315/75 tires if they are just equivalent to a 35-12.5 tire? Just was thinking about it and it seems strange for a company to make the same tire in both these sizes.
 
a 35 x 12.5 is the overall height and width of the tire. (would be the same size if you had a 15, 16.6 or 17" rim)

a 315/75 is the width and sidewall height. (would be taller the bigger your rims are)
 
315/75 is in the metric size format that most modern tires are made in. 35x12.5 is the older flotation format if I remember correctly.

Most companies make 315/75R16's while few have a 35x12.5R16.

With the growth in 16" and bigger wheels the last several years there will be more of the xxx/yyyRzz sizes and less of the heightxwidthRwheelsize sizes.
 
315 is the tread width in mm, 75 is the aspect ratio as a % and R16 is obviously rim diameter.


metric seems to be the new way for all tire sizing. most of the world operates in metric.

YES! Eventually all the tires will be measured in this format, and you guys will bend to accomodate our metric system!

Does anyone else see the humor in the fact that the 'metric' size still has the Wheel Diameter in Inches?

I always figured it was becuase the sizes were pretty well established and it was easier to have a wheel maker in Japan make a 16" wheel that would for sure fit a tire made or installed anywhere else in the world. The rest of the dimensions aren't as important.
 
Probably true.
It's still funny though.

As an old engineer once told me:

"We're working our way to the metric system; inch by inch"

Yes, USA set the standard wheel sizes many decades ago and the world has conformed to inch-based diameters.

You will still find lots of people SURE that 315 is the height of the tire.
 
well we probably have the biggest market for rims/tires so if their tires/wheels wont work with our junk, nobody here will buy them, so they have no choice but to go with inches for rim size :)

Used to work with a guy that's only qualification as a tire expert was that he worked as a gas station attendant for a while before he joined the Marines.

He was SURE that 315 was the TREAD width in CENTImeters and 75 was the height of the SIDEWALL in centimeters. I recite the formula for coverting metric sizes into english measurements from memory and can almost do the math in my head but nope, he would have none of it. Even after we broke the calculator, pen, and paper out for him he was sure we were full of it.

Of course he also drove an XJ Cherokee that was bone stock except for 15x8's and stock sized tires. Looked like rubber bands stretched around a chrome bushel basket...:rolleyes:
 
You know I always figured a tire listed in a metric size (I.E. 315x75x16) would represent a tire close to the size you want but have a MUCH higher load rating than a flotation tire such as 35x12.5x15. 16 inch tires always have a higher load rate than a 15". I do know that a differnt size rim would change the hight BUT if i seen a 35x12.5x16 and a 315x75x16 I would asume the metric size would have a higher load or more plys.
 
That is usually the trend. It's rare to find a 16" LT-rated metric tire with a load rating of less than D. Try to find a 15" truck tire with a load range over C.
