just like the subject says, why is it? I have a single redtop in there now and I was going to put that in my dd and put 2 yellow group 78's in my blazer. I like having 2 of the same so i can just run them in parallel and nothing else to buy. opinions?

They are ok for starting batteries they just don't have as many cranking amps as redtops. They are a hybrid battery ment to span the gap between the redtop and marine blue top.

Harley

the ones i was looking at only has 50cca differance, and with both of them in parallel im sure it will be good enough.

I'm running the D34/78 yellow top in my Suburban. The dealer told me that's what I needed because of my stereo and my 8274. It's been in there almost a year.

the only reason I don't like it is because the yellow top comes with a 1 year free replacement, and the red top is a 3 year free replacement.

Doh:doah: I just dropped 2 bills on mine... Thanks for the heads up:rolleyes:

What makes you think the Yellow is no good for starting?

They are fine for starting. They are designed for it. It's a good battery for vehicles with any type of high power stuff, like high wattage lights, stereos..etc.

so between the Red and Yellow, which is the better for a trail/wheeling truck?

That depends on your planned use. If you have a winch yellow would probably be best.

It all depends on which yellow top battery you have, I run dual industrial optima yellow tops and have about 1800 cold cranking amps...
quote from optima website
"OPTIMA Commercial YellowTop Charging Information

YellowTop Type: D31A & D31T
These batteries are dual purpose. They are designed for engine start and deep-cycle applications for use in vehicles with large accessory loads."

http://optimabatteries.com/_media/documents/specs/D31A_082104.pdf

also the nice thing about the commercial ones I use is:
"D31A, D31T Commercial 24 months free replacement."

So the long and short of it is... pick the right battery and you will have no worries...
gabe

My batteries are behind my drivers seat... there is no way that they would fit in the normal trays... they would also be too heavy

I've got one D31A, I fabbed a custom battery tray.
Good battery. But big and heavy.

I bought the Blue torch fabs battery tray specifically made for optimas:D BTW, I have had both optimas....red and yellow. Never had a winch with the red, but haven't noticed a difference.

I prefer the yellow top personally. I bought one for my Mustang in 98 (due to the stereo and underdrive pulleys) and ran it till I rolled it in 05. Pulled it out and it is now in my car trailer, powering my winch. Once the red tops go out in my truck, they will be replaced with yellows as well.
