Ok, I need some pros/cons for diesel....

This is my situation.

I bought a '77 K5 when I was in Colorado at a very good price. It has a 350 4spd and that's the main reason I bought it. I used it mostly for hunting, fishing and camping. I now live in Mississippi and with the higher humidity (from 15% to +90%) the already rusted body is worse and won't pass inspection.

I've come across a '83 K5 with a much better body, but it has a 6.2L diesel with an auto trans. I'm planning on doing a body swap unless someone can convince me that the 6.2L is worth keeping. Presently it doesn't run, but I'm told will run if the starter is replaced and mounting bolts/threads are repaired.

I don't do much towing, and will continue to use it for hunting, camping and ocassionally some light muddin'. In the mountains I had this thing on angles and bouncing around that the carb flooded out. Besides that torque and it's tough to kill a diesel once started, those are the benefits of the diesel.

Any input is appreciated.

Mileage and gas prices are better. Torque is available at lower RPM. And of course there is always " Banks " /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

Don't forget it'll run upside down if it could maintain oil pressure.

Or it can pretty much run under water with a snorkel... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That too...plus they're dead simple compared to gas engines.

Don't forget that people who drive diesel vehicles are generally more intelligent than those who don't... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

GM 6.2's are not my favorite engines but they are well suited for what you are planning on and fairly durrable and simple .
Oil burners are great for low end torque wheeling !

I was going to go along the lines of they would less likely to turn out gay, but I the way you put it is less offensive to someone that may not know your sense of humor. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I like both of your sense of humor. I'll go out of my way NOT to be PC.

From past experience, I would keep the diesel.

I had a K10 with 6.2/700r4. The mileage was great and it did have lots of low end TQ. Unfortunately it came to a premature demise because it also had 3.08 gears, 35" tires, 1/2 ton axles and a very /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif driver.

Check out the diesel forum here and you will see how simple it is to keep a 6.2 running for 5 million miles.

Now, is this gonna be a daily driver or a mostly trail rig? If its gonna be a trail rig I would swap the 4spd in. For a DD keep the auto, especially if its a 700.

I remember seeing some statistics about how guys who drive diesels get laid 10 times more often than the lame-asses with the gassers...

I'll personally vouch for this!! something about the way diesels sound...I think thats what the study concluded. /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Could it be that there is testosterone released with the diesel hydrocarbons?

I think when diesel combustion occurs Pheromones are released that attract the opposite sex. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
