Why There's No Big Block V6 ?

I saw a 1964 C-20 stepside long bed with a V6 in it sitting up on blocks in a driveway on my way to New Bedford MA one day a few years ago--of course I was interested in it and decided to pull over and take a closer look at it on my way back,if someone was home..

As I walked up the driveway,I saw the diff was missing--it had an Eaton rear end ,and the chuck was out of it..then I saw it sitting in the bed,the ring & pinion were rusted to death and had some stripped teeth..a quick look in the cab revealed it had a 4 speed..

Then a HUGE german shepard came running at me ,barking like a hell hound,I quickly retreated back to my truck and was about to drive off, when someone came from the back yard and grabbed the dog by the collar, and asked "what do you want ?..your lucky he didn't get you!"..

I asked if the truck was for sale,he hemmed and hawed and said "well--I love that truck, was going to restore it--then the rear end blew, and I haven't been able to find another one like it--and its getting pretty rotted now from sitting.."
"I'd take a grand for it--it still runs OK,might need a clutch though"..

I got back out and took a closer look under the truck--the frame was still nice, but the floors are rockers were punky and holes could be poked in them with your fingers, but at least it had no patchwork ever done to it before..but I decided it was a bit too rough for me to tackle, especially at that price,if it was cheaper I'd have probably bought it regardless ,so I took his phone # and told him if I changed my mind,I'd call him..

Drove by there about a month later,and it was gone,I assume someone bought it..then a friend tells me a few weeks later "Hey--I saw a truck you'd like at the pick & pull--a '64 Chevy with a V6 & a 4 speed"!..
I asked "was it a cranberry maroon color"?..
"Yes it was--did you already see it"?...
"Yeah, but not there--at the owners house!--he wanted $1000 for it,"firm"...I doubt he got more than $200 for junking it..:(
I had told the guy if he would take less to call me too!..:mad1:

Knew a guy with one about 15 years ago back in Michigan. Beautiful red ‘67 GMC K15 shortbed stepside with the 305 V6. Had a mean sound to the engine/exhaust. Offered to sell it to me for way less than it was worth but way more than I had.

You can still get a lot of parts for them on RockAuto.

I have a 478 in a 73 K2500 at my place in New Mexico it’s tourqey But heavy as all get out, uses alot of fuel Like makes a 454 seem like a 305 .

They made a diesel version of the 478 that’s supposedly pretty decent , I have never seen one though.

A friend of mine geeks out on V6 gmc’s he has a Mid 50’s gmc 10-wheeler dump truck project with a twin 6 and 13-and-4 trans setup he daily’s a 65 GMC 3/4 ton with 478 with a new process 5-speed behind it.

The next part of the question is, for me, is, IF these engines were so good (and i do not doubt this) why did GMC switch completely to chevy power by 72?

Who said they were good? Ok yeah, but I don't think they were good enough to overcome the great SBC

Because I never saw such a thing !--up here RUST is the usual valve cover color, once the paint comes off..:D
We had an old grain truck with one of these old pigs, I was to young to really know what it was, the old pig was oil soaked and full of dirt from the fields, but under all that grease and grime was the very rare and covenanted plaid covers.
I remember my old man wiping one down once and telling me how goofy they were.....
So I always knew what they were but I've never even seen another 305 with my own eyes.
And I have no idea what they did with that old junker C-60

I recall many articles in old popular mechanics and similar magazines about the 305 V6 that GMC designed ,along with full page ads touting how ruggedly built they were, and how they ran cooler than any other light truck engine-(Pictured below)--I think Smokey Yunic even praised the design and durability of the GMC V6 line up..

Found another article on the 637 V8's and some of the V6's too

I've seen the plaid covers once before. I bought a hood from a guy over in the Indy area, with a '65 or '66 Suburban. He had a pair of the plaid covers hanging on his garage wall.

i apologize.

But since i'm in a foul mood (for reasons i'd rather not get into now), here's another engine i'll torture you with:

Huh, never seen that before.
I've been on that other website before.
Makes me chuckle a bit that they say it's a favorite of hot rodders.
Never once have I seen that. And I'm pretty versed, with lots of cars shows/ magazines/ interwebzs surfer. I feel like I'm reasonably in tune with alot of car stuff
