So, they rebuilt the transmission and resealed the transfer case. It's a 208, pretty sure that's aluminum. Why would the guy paint it? Seems dumb to me. What do you think?

makes it look like he did something when your 208 was probably fine and he didnt touch it.

good ol transmission guys lol hypothetically speaking of course.

Make it look nice? A lot of people paint their transmissions and transfer cases...look through some of the build threads here. Ryoken spent a ton of time detailing his. It shows that take alot of pride in your work/truck, that you want it to be the best it can.

I know some bigger companies paint everything the same color. Probably if the tag or something comes off they can tell by the color that it was one of their own rebuilts.

Like Jasper Engines and Transmissions paints everything a gray color. Whole engines, trans, and transfers.

I was just thinking if that paint chips off, it will look like hell. But if you guys think it's a reasonable thing to do, I won't bitch at him. I like to paint things pretty too, just not the aluminum stuff.

I always thought that painting a tranny/ trans case was a bad idea, since it doesnt dissapate the heat as easily.

?

Maybe he liked you.Did he give you a wink and a slap on the rump?:yikes:

Mines painted with transmission fluid
I'm betting this is close.

Unless they painted it black or a dark color it's probably so leaks show up easily. Same reason engines used to be painted.

I powdercoated mine gray. I would have done black, but I wanted to be able to spot leaks if/when they spring up.

Aluminum should NEVER be painted. Things that are made of aluminum are usually made that way for a reason (to dissapate heat). Once you paint aluminum you are pretty much sealing in the heat and the aluminum can no longer dissapate the heat as it was intended to do. There will be people here who will argue the point but I could care less as I know better than to paint aluminum items such as trans cases, and t-cases.

I paint aluminum so it does not turn white from oxidization. Some of my better parts I have ceramicoated.

IMO things like the 208 more to reduce weight than to dissapate heat. Of course aluminum transfers heat quicker than steel and I never paint aluminum stuff.

I really doubt that painting an NP208 is going to burn it up.

The heat transfer is much more relevant on an auto trans of course.

Why do all the big name tranny rebuilder companies paint their trannies? It must not make that big of a difference:confused:

only reason i would do it is because itd be a hell of a lot easier to trace leaks thanks to the contrast depending on your color.

I just painted my 241 for my s10 project. I used Cast Blast 1200* paint. Its like 12 bucks a can an tough as nails. Even used etching primer PLUS I used under coating on the outside of the case joints as a sorta "exterior seal" to prevent dirt from pushing in the rtv.

I was gonna do orange but decided against it because our orange enamel at work loves to lift if you wait too long between coats.

The sm465 and 208 in my fullsize are both painted orange, no issues.

Long story short I've never had issues with painting transfer cases.
