Widest tire, stock wheel?

Hello all,

About to pull the trigger on some new tires. Ive got a 1990 3/4 ton suburban with the stock 8 lug 16x6s(?) i believe... Just want to know if a 12.50 or 13.00 inch tire will fit and actually be able to run correctly.

Unless you measured them most stock single wheel 8lug wheels were 7.5" or 8" wide. And I wouldn't hesitate to put a 12.5" wide tire on them.

i didnt measure them. For some reason i was under the impression they were 6.5s. In that case if they are 7.5/8s thats awesome! Thanks for the reply
 
depends on the height of the tires. I have 39.5 13.5s on 6.5" rims.

Doesn't necessarily. If you air them to the proper pressure they should be fine. I use the chalk on the tread method

I have NEVER seen one that wide, and I have lots of them I have 16.5"x6", 16.5"x6.5", 16.5"x6.75", and 16"x6.5" wide steel wheels at my house.

As for the tires, yes they will fit. I have ran 33x12.50x16.5", 35x12.50x16.5", 36x12.50x16.5", 37x12.50x16.5", and 38x12.50x16.5" on stock steel wheels.

i just put some bald 285/75/16 on stock 6.5 wide 8 lug rims for rollers / test fitting tires for my next redo project the k30 plow truck .

thay went on tight had to use extra arm on tire machine . but once on thay dont look to bad . can get pics soon and post up .

Yeah, all the 16's I've seen were around 6.5 too. And most of the 16.5's except I did just buy a Burb with wider 16.5's, not sure what they are off of. They are 8 or 8.5 inches wide.

Never say never. You just haven't seen them yet. ;)
Wide steel wheels came on '69-'72 Camper Specials. 16.5 x 8 1/4" & 9 3/4".
Very hard to find these days and worth their weight in gold! I've had a few sets over the yrs. and kick myself for ever selling them. Only came on 2wd that I've seen or know of.
They may have run into the early/mid '70s as well but can't remember for sure. Pretty sure I had a '74 Camper with 9 3/4" out back but the '80s/'90s are a foggy memory. To add to the confusion, a tire company was making wide rims in the early '70s but can't remember who? Goodyear or Firestone? Think they were 16" x 8 with 8 lug and 6 lug....
Plus Ford had wide camper special rims as well from '67 to '77 and they fit GM 8 lug no problem.
Widest late model steel wheel in 8 lug is Ford F250/350 truck to '97(went metric in '98) & E250/E350 van to 2007 at 16.5 x 7.5" They take a 8 lug GM hubcap too. Tight but they do fit.

Anyway, like the guys said, anything after '76 is going be narrow and a '90 will have 16.5 x 6.5. And again, like Martin said, your tires will fit.
 
I did not say they don't exist. I said I have never seen them, and I have seen a lot of 16.5" steel wheels. I had a 1975 K20 Camper Special. It had 16.5x6.5" wheels.

But there were no wide 16's, correct? The wider 16.5's on my new Suburban are the first factory (but not factory on this truck) wide wheels I've seen in person.

OK as someone already mentioned if YOU haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
I sold all my 16.5" wheels so I can't prove anything but I will get some of my 16" wide wheels

Yep, that's why I'm asking. Until just now, I've never heard of wide factory 16's. So what was there besides the 6.5 width?
 
There where 16x8" in 8 lug but like I said, I'm quite sure they were put out by tire companies and made by Kelsey Hayes.
The widest factory GM 8 lug 16" rim I've seen was 6.5" and they are listed in the '73-'78 parts book. Never found anything else listed for 16".
Wheels on your Sub look cool. Pretty rare if they are GM.
