?? with high torque mini starter. who\'s running one?

I can't seem to get my mini starter to stop whinning when cranking. I tried some shims but the problem got worse! After checking it out, I found that the starter is to far away! shims made it worse! I don't know how to make it closer without shaving the starter boss down. anybody ever run into this??

One of the guys running a BBC 454 in our club had that problem (inproper machining of an aftermarket starter). He used the poor man's milling machine (big 7" disc grinder.....but a 4" would work too) to "shave" the mating surface down. He said it took him several tries (removing a little each time) to finally get it correct. He could have used shim(s) if he went too much, but did not feel like doing that, so he went a little at a time. He said the hard part was removing material uniformly (especially around the edges).

I have a Tilton mini starter that I got used from a guy with a drag car. He had the starter milled .030" before I got it. It fits and meshes wonderfully with my motor, no shims and never had any problems.

thats what I sort of figured i would do. if too much gets shaved, at least i can shim it back!

I went to the guy that does my starters. "i have never seen that before" but he is gonna mill .030 off the mount for me.

Henry BlaznRebl on this board has a mini starter on his 350 with no troubles I am aware of....might be more of a BB thing.

hey. i bought a powermaster for my 350. it went right on w/o n e shims. then when i swapped in the BB, it went right on there too without n e problems.

I got a summit mini starter on my BBC in my car. Bolted right in the first time and haven't had a problem with it. They include directions to make sure you have the proper clearance before you try to turn it over.
It was like a paper clip you should be able to stick between the teeth. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
