I have the 72' in the garage getting some overhauls done and was thinking about doing the XJ swap on it, and possibly my 67'. Does anyone know if it is any different than the 73-87 swap?
Your steering box input shaft should be the large one and the XJ shaft requires the small one of the later boxes and the steering column needs to be the double D end which I think started in 1978 or 1979 (yours should be a splined end IIRC). I'm sure with enough work you could figure something out though.
Scotts right. Mine was wrong on both ends. You can modify the splined end if the steering shaft into a double-d, but the other end is tougher to figure out.
Getting rid of the rag joint has been a great mod for me though.
How about the u-joints off a 80's G series van?..maybe they have the right splines and you could adapt the shafts to the first generation trucks?..
We discovered a Dodge 4x4 70's truck steering shaft fit our 70's GM plow truck at the junkyard, after the rubber rag joint failed--the Dodge one had a real u-joint at each end..
