Sorry guys, I'm sure it's been asked but I can't find it. I'm at work (where my toolbox is) tonight and I plan on going to a junkyard on my days off (Wednesday-Friday) to get myself an XJ shaft and maybe a few other things. What tools do I need to remove an XJ steering shaft?

easiest to pull the column from the firewall
remove lower dash piece = Philips
big bolts to dash frame = deep socket something :)
2 bolts in firewall = ratchet, extention, and some socket
2 bolts on xj shaft = different years had different bolts. 7/16 12 point and 13mm

so bring everything :)

my j yard had about 15 xjs. I just found on that had the steering box off the frame and pulled it easily.

You may be able to shop around

I haven't come across those easy ones yet, but if the brake booster is already gone, it makes it a lot easier to get at that upper bolt on the shaft. You will need to get the airbox off as well MuddySub, but that's an easy extention and socket as well.

I went the steering column route when I yanked mine. literally was a 5minute job. Once you get the lower shaft bolt loose/off and the upper shaft bolt loose/off, lower the column inside, put the seat all the way back, put your feet up on the dash and PULL, like your rowing a boat. hopefully you wont end up on the back seat like I did. :haha:
