years with the 500 caddy

I think it ran from 1970-1976--the eldorado FWD caddy's all had the 500,some of the others could have the 472 motor, but I'm not sure what year the 472 stopped.(I'm thinking 1972,but I could be wrong)-You will find any caddy info you need at www.500cid.com -they have a message board and can answer many questions like this one.I hope to put the 76 500 have in my shed to use someday soon before it turns into a POS!--its been sitting for about 5 years now.I'd have put it in one of my trucks already if I didnt have to change the oilpan--the rear sump pan from an eldorado is needed to stuff it in a chevy truck--none left around here in the junkyards,so I'm hoping Moroso or Mildoon will start making a conversion oilpan so I wont have to go with a rusty used one. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

No, its carb'd. The carb is MIA, this car is in perfect condition and all original except its missing the damn carb. I have searched high and low all over my 6000 sq. ft. shop and cannot find the damn thing anywhere. What kind of carbs did these things have and what do they look like?

1968-1976...the torque and HP figures significantly changed somewhere along the line but from what I understand this was due to the method of measurment rather than an notable power decrease. All I know is the 500 does a nice job of pinning you to the seat when you stomp on the skinny pedal. I started tearing apart another greasy pig last night...another 500 out of a 76'...I can't wait to see what the inside looks like.

You need the carb I just took off last night? I really dont need it and dont know what I'm planning on doing with it. It probably could use a rebuild since I've never heard it running.

The 76 500 I have had a Q-jet--they do list an injected version in my chiltons book, but I havent seen any yet--I have seen the injection on 77 and up 368 and some 425 motors in the junkyards.Mine had no carb, but a friend gave me one off a 78 425 that should work ok--if I ever get the motor into something!!. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

68-69 eldorados = 472
70-76 eldorados = 500
68-74 all other cadddy's = 472
75-76 all caddy's = 500

I saw a TBI 500 Eldo in a junkyard years ago, almost bought it ($200) to put in my 70 Burb, but wife nixed the idea.I am pretty sure it was a 76 model, but I never wrote anything down, just remember looking at the sticker under the hood.

Dont go by the listings for tourque and HP in the books--my 76 500 is only rated at 235 hp and 365 ft lbs of tourque--but the "seat of my pants" dyno says its grossly underrated!
Its due to the way they measure it--after 1972 they changed the ratings, taking a reading from the tranny output shaft, with all accesories installed and operating--the older specs were measured at the flywheel on a dyno, with no acessories on it.The "old" ones were rated at 360 hp and 510 ft lbs of tourque, and they did have higher compression ratios, but the "low performance" smog motors will still stain your underwear if your not careful!--and they arent as fussy for high octane fuel as the older ones. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
