So I've continued looking off and on while busting my ass at work and the fire department, and happened to stumble across a 1976 K5 only 2.5 hours away from me. Its not a full convertible (I'm very begrudgingly accepting this is simply not the right time for me to have one, cant find one without rust issues, and dont have the skills, or the space, to restore one) But its a manual transmission truck (huge selling point for me), and has quite a few perks....

76 k5 blazer 8lug ton swap
4 speed granny gear trans, new clutch and flywheel
205 transfrcase
14 bolt full floating rear, 4.88 gears,locker
Danna 44 front 4.88 gears, Detroit trutrac locker, completely re built, new u joints, calipers, steel brake lines
350 with new eledabroke carb, new alternator, starter, long tube headers, power steering pump
10 inches of new lift, shakle flip in back with 3 inch skyjacker springs, 3inch body lift
Almost new 38.15.15 super swamper boggers 3/4 plus tread
Has rust in the bed, body in good shape, no frame rust, needs 2 bed mounts fixed
Has exhaust leak
Other than that the k5 is mechanicaly sound would drive anywhere in it.
I drive on road but just to cruise and to go 4x4ing

The big negative is the rust in the bed is so bad apparently the tailgate falls off when you unlatch it. when latched it stays in place. something about the hinges rusting off or something  The front floorpans have already been replaced but "werent that bad" before they were done. He said the lift is the 3in body, with 4in front springs and add-a-leafs to bring it to 10 total. then a shackle flip and 3in springs in the rear. I thought I'd swap my 6in BDS springs under there for 9inches of total lift and returning the shackles to the right side up position.

The biggest negative about this truck seems to be the condition of the bed of the truck. He openly admits theres bondo back there to make it look pretty, the whole truck is rattle can primered one year old. It looks like the truck has definitely seen some good mud and trail use, but its not beat to hell like its been a rock crawler or anything. current asking price is $4000 obo, heading out sunday to take a look and see how bad the bed is.

I asked the guy why he's selling it after doing all the listed work in the ad, turns out he loves the truck, and nothing is wrong with it per say, but he somehow got paralyzed and cant drive stick anymore.

Pics to follow....

Oh I was planning on seeing how far I can push the "obo" part of that ad, but I figured I'd at least see how bad the rust in the bed is so my offer carried a bit more weight.

Look at the back bumper to the body in the one flex picture. I'm going to say body mounts are gone. Probably rust. That's a $2000 truck here.

yeah I noted that bumper/body gap and cringed. He admits the rust back there is notable, and that two of the bed mounts need to be fixed. Im guessing the rust back there is pretty significant, but the cab area looks so solid. at least I dont have to worry about rocker boxes on a half cab truck

How serious would the repairs be to put a new floor in the bed and re-mount the bed mounts back there? anyone have a guess on cost for that job? for negotiating purposes. Its just sheet metal right? nothing really structural or complex?

If you find somebody to give you a price for that work, up front, he is lying to you. Not sure what body shop prices are around you, $100 an hour here. Figure 20 to 25 hours. Plus the sheet metal.

That truck looks like a DIY project. Too costly to pay to have it done. Or buy it cheap enough to swap the parts into a decent body truck.

Just my 2 cents.

For $4-5000 you could buy a rust free truck out west or down south and drive it home. I wouldn't pay more than $800 for that rust bucket.

Oh I agree, and honestly the road trip would be great because my girlfriend said she'd love to go for the ride with me and that would be a helluva lot of fun. But i'm very particular about the options I want, and what my budget is. Also trucks out west or down south would require at least $1000-1500 in travel costs in fuel, food, and lodging, which cuts into what I can spend on the initial purchase. Not ruling out west coast trucks, and again, this one may be wayyyy worse than the pictures imply, and not worth my trouble in buying. luckily I happen to enjoy long drives in the mountains just for the sake of doing it, so If I drive out and see the truck and its not worth it, or I cant come to a price I'm ok with, its not a wasted day ;)

1000-1500 dollar rig here. My son sold his 88 with 35s on it for 2000 tires where new and only rust a little in his inner front fenders and back edge of his front fenders at bottom.

This thing has been road hard. Body twist, looks like mirror bracket got bashed, and front grill took a shot. Enjoy the day out with low hopes and no more than 2g's in your pocket.

Oh I'm going out there with $0 in my pocket, those are my expectations, after this many years shopping for a new K5 to replace the griz. If I'm plesantly surprised, Ill shake the guys hand on a price, and then come back out with the money and a 2nd driver.

Seriously check Montana craigslist around butte and billings. I saw every thing from 74-95 on there this week in better shape and 1000 bucks less. In fact I think I saw a 74 or 76 with your manual in it over in butte. Once your past Minnesota most of the state's up north don't run salt. We may have a little more rust on our rigs than California but not much.

Seriously man a flight out here or to Montana and the money to drive it back.

I have seen rust free trucks like that here for 2500 bucks could probably get em for 2k

4k for that thing is way too much its got problems, that aren't readily visible

I helped AJMBLAZER find a very nice rust free K5 out here for under $1500. Took it to get a few maintenence items fixed before he flew in and drove it home. In order to make it work, you just need to know someone on the other end you can trust to look at it and handle cash for you.

i have to agree with everyone saying to try the montana area i see k5s for sale everyday around here and in billings.
i just looked at a 78 today that was in about the same shape as the one you posted and he only wanted 1k for it.

Good luck on your hunt.
