York on 454 question

If the 2-bolt flange is available, maybe the head could be pulled and milled flat there. It's going to be basically at atmospheric pressure so sealing shouldn't be too hard.
 
I think you could just change the top plate to fix that. I bought a whole reman compressor at the parts store for a volvo, back then I think it was $140. Not sure what it would be now.
