Anybody running a ZZ4 crate motor in thier rig? If so, how do you like it? I never really considered one(was looking for more power) but I know a guy selling one almost brand new for $2500. It's not the power level I was looking for (400+hp,400+tq) but it's definitely a better start to build up later than my Goodwrench 350. What do you guys think?

I've been doing some shopping around for GM crate engines for my El Camino, and the best deal I'm seeing is a 290hp/350cid for under $1,600.00 . May only be in the 300hp range, but the price is hard too beat consittering that 3 year warrenty.

I believe Jerry (JK5 on here) has one in his K5, you could ask him about it. It sure was fun to ride in:D

I'm not in a big hurry, I've got alot of bills too take care of first, and a upcomming move isn't going too be cheap.

Can't put that in our trucks... 290hp at 5100rpm... that's definitely made for a car.

Check http://350chevys.com for some awesome truck engine choices... still 290hp for the Stage 1, $200 more than the GM, but 380ft/lbs of torque and that 290 hits around 3000-3500rpm, which is more appropriate for our rigs.

As for the ZZ4, it's also not made for a truck who's normal rpm range is idle-5000.... but at 355hp, you are getting a nice machine no matter what.

Also, Summit has that GM 350 longblock for 1419.95 right now... check it out.

I bought mine in 99...it's one of my best mods...
LT-1 block...combined with liteweight aluminum heads..
Sure is a sweet powerpack for a trailrig...that does rocks and mud.:D
The only drawback is...fuel...you have to run high-test.

Here's mine right after installing..

Cool, if it gets your 1ton running gear and 44's moving pretty good, it should should scream with my 35's. That sucks about the premium, do you think I could swap in some AFR 195cc, 74cc heads to drop compression a little bit?

No....I'd run-it as is....;)
You'll be the envy of all your fellow trail-riders...You'll turn some heads.:D :D

Just get a 1800-2500 stall convertor..to stay in the motors power range.
Also get a good 3 or 4 core radiator and an electric fan.

Now....it sounds a little radical....
But..I idle around rocks..all the time..
At Summit's Truckfest last fall..I was only rig to make the Rock Crawl...without going off the course.:D  (There was a Jeep on 46" IROC's, Badlands Buggy too)
So...idling around will be NO issue.:)

$2500 is a steal for that motor. I'd buy-it.;)

Here's my rig on 35" SSR's.

How "almost brand new" is it ? How many miles? The sneek peek pics look sic :pimp: ...I think a zz motor will work well for your set up. Can't wait to check it out !

JK5...Cool, I already have a 4 core radiator so I'm good there, the higher stall converter I'll have to think about. Thanks for the info, I think I'm going to pick it up, it's too much of a deal to pass on it.

JIM88K5...Hey Jimmy, thanks man, you guys will definitely have to come down next desert season and we'll do some "testing" with it. The engine has less than 1,000 miles, it was for a hot rod project that got scrapped. He wants $2700 for the engine and 2wd TH350 and said he'd sell the engine for $2500. I think I'm going to try to get him to come down a little more still though.

I don't know about those numbers seems like they are way too high... where is he getting 440 hp out of those parts? Not to mention the stock tbi manifold 350 making 330 hp... price is good but i'm not buying the 440 hp with nothing but vortecs a manifold and a fancy injection system...do you know anyone who has bought one of those motors?

Ii just put one is 3-4 weeks ago. Paid $2500 also. I've got 38's with 4.10s and it runs great. It out runs my TJ with the inline 6 and stock tires. I highly recommend it, but as someone else said it needs 93 octane. I'm going to try turning the timing down to see if I can get away with 91.

Shoot, we've got maybe a month and it will be too hot for me. I'm not down with that 100+ degree weather anymore.

So it won't run on 91 as is from the factory? I'm here in SoCal and the pumps here don't even sell 93. If I can't run at least 91 I don't think I can run it.

I sold many of those suckers mostly for street rods and some went into street cars and 4x4s. I'd bet you would'nt have a problem with 91. If it came down to it you could dump in a can octane booster or mix it with some TRICK. Of all the zz motors I sold, nobody ever came back with any issues. You could always back the timing down a few degrees... Dump in some TRICK and crank it back for saturday night :cool1:
