Black Betty seems to be droppin oil pressure to zero on the down hilll decents. I've got a mechanical oil pressure gauge and the sending line is tapped into a port on the block up by the distributer. The oil pan is stock 350 1982 2wd pan. Help... please.... low budget help, please. hahah.

If the lifters aren't clattering then you have at least 15psi of oil pressure and your gauge is lying to you. I suggest trying a different gauge at least for test purposes.

this is going to sound stupid but... did you check the oil level?

I'd tend to believe a mechanical guage. An improved pan and perhaps an accumulator would be cheap insurance. I've seen some nice accumulators on ebay recently....

overfill 1 qt.

This is the worst idea. Overfilling an engine can have some nasty effects. The crank can start hitting the oil and aerate it enough that the pump can't pump anything because its full of air.

If the problem is in fact that the oil is leaving the pick-up tube area the best repair is an oil pan with baffles and trap doors that keep oil at the pick-up tube.

Oil level is correct. Hadn't heard any lifters tickin. I wouldn't think I'm the only one with the problem if there really was a problem so I'm just tryin to feel out other experieces.

do you know how close the pick up is to the pan??if its to far up and you go down a steep decent you could loose oil pressure...ive never seen it done but you could do the buble gum trick where you put a piece of gum on your pick up then put the pan on and pull the pan off again...if the gum is on the pan then your pick up is close enough...dont get it to close to the pan though cause you can loose oil pressure if the pick up is flat against the pan

possibly lost the pickup tube off the pump maybe

is it welded on or ?

thats my suggestion or get a second cheapo oil gauge to check with the other

I assume the descents are very steep? If so you are probably uncovering the pickup since all the drainback oil will end up in the front of the pan.

I get the theory here but...

overfill 1 qt.

This is the real world experience that I've seen in several other rigs and what has worked for my truck.

Overfilling .5-1 quart seems to work well and hold pressure much better than leaving the oil at the stock fill level.

The best answer is an accumulator, a bigger pan with baffles will help too.

I agree, overfill one quart and see what happens. Accumulator and aftermarket pan are the "big bucks" fix, but a little extra oil should do the trick. One extra quart may rob a little HP and even MPG, but I don't think it's nearly enough to cause dangerous amounts of aeration.

what kind of oil filter are you using. i had an issue once with loosing oil pressure talked to one of the guys at the parts store and he told me fram had some defective oil filters out. changed the oil put in a napa gold oil filter problem fixed. never used fram oil filters again....

Yeah the downhills were the kind where your a**hole puckers up. hahha. But they are long and im light in the back so I go slow. I'll try to overfill and see what happens next time I can find a steep downhill. I suppose the pickup screen could have come off but I dont really wanna pull that pan off if ya know what I mean.

I'm using a Fram filter by the way.

Next time you drain the oil, rap the bottom of the pan and see if you hear anything. i dont know that you would be able to hear it with it full of oil?

yeah I'll do that too.

Whats the most accurate place to get an oil pressure reading on that generation SB? Is there anywhere besides up at the dizzy?

Fram filters are notorious for collapsing under pressure and thus restricting flow. It might be a good time to switch to a NAPA/WIX filter and evaluate your thoughts on the oil filter bypass discussion. I'm running a WIX 50161 and will switch to the larger filter next change.
