03 gmc duramax with 350k (BBT) transmission fun

So, I was able to find a replacement armrest at the junkyard. It was cracked as well, but in a less critical spot, so I was able to use some epoxy and fix it. Forgot to take pics of the fix.

On to another issue, I broke the drivers side outside door handle today.

That officially means I've broken all 4. :doah:
I've been happy with the replacement handles from Depo on Amazon. Haven't broke any of the replacements.

You must be crazy strong. I never broke any of my handles and I owned my 02 for almost 10 years.

lol, I don't imagine it has anything to do with my massive strength. :D At this point this 2003 is 16 years old, so that is likely the issue. Just fatigue.

I'd prefer something I could just pick up at O'Reilly, but don't want to do it wrong either

Yama bond, Honda bond etc are all kind of the same two stroke case half sealers. Since two stroke case half’s must be well sealed and the live in an oil bath situation those types of sealers are really good for submerged applications.

I bet being in larger metro areas you could find two stroke case sealer pretty easy.

Right Stuff will work the best. We used it for 7.3L oil pans. They have no gasket and you literally put a 3/4" tall bead on to make sure they don't leak.
Mitsubishi Fuso medium duty truck engines use their own stuff called Three Bond. It was orange and same thing, just a sealer and glue all in one. They used no gaskets on their engines except a rubber seal for the valve cover. Horrible stuff to disassemble though since it was like glue.

Is the break submerged in oil when it's full on a 7.3? Since it is on a Duramax lower pan, one of the steps to the reseal is supposed to be waiting for 24hrs before refilling it so that the inside of the gasket can cure. That was my only concern about using "right stuff", since I haven't seen it used that way on an engine.

I did use it to seal the 2 halves of a transfer case and it seems to be holding up.

It's above the oil line but I have had several other kinds of silicone leak and it is the only one that won't. There is a pretty short wait time with it. On a 7.3L pan it takes you a while to get things back together to refill it and it's dry in that amount of time. I would probably give it overnight anyways just to be safe if you can have it down for that long.

I got busy with other projects this weekend, but I'm hoping to do this next weekend. If I can get it apart over the weekend, letting it sit on the lift for a day won't be much of a hassle.

I love me some right stuff and it would probably work well, but in this case I would be seriously considering HondaBond etc. because I know those good products for this situation.

If I can get my hands on it, I will. This will be enough of a PITA that it'll be worth a couple extra bucks to give me a good chance of not having to do it again.

Finally got around to fixing the lower oil pan leak today.

Luckily the 6" lift made it pretty easy. The crossmember that is usually in the way and needs to be removed was low enough to be out of the way.

Being how I really don't want to do this again, I bought the recommended sealant from GM, and made sure to clean the mating surfaces really well.

I did find something a little concerning though.

I'm not sure how well it shows up in the pic, but there appears to be a defect in the surface. It's pretty deep and goes all the way across. :mad1:

I put some extra rtv in the area and made sure to torque all the bolts completely, so hopefully it holds.

Its sitting drying overnight. I'll fill her up tomorrow and find out.
