Went into service on Saturday for oil change and find out that the suburban now need some new brakes. I do still enjoy driving but it sure seems like I keep fixing thing and costing more money!

Dealer gave me a quote of $440 to replace front rotors and pads. So I did some reasearch on parts. Found out there are three AC Delco rotors and don't really know if there is a difference or not. Obviously, the slotted one is different but is it worth it?

Here are the three AC Delco rotors as well as the EBC rotors.

Any experience with any of these?

I'm thinking Green Stuff EBC pads (7000) or the Hawk pads.

Can you not, or don't have a place to do the brakes yourself? $440?! sheesh

seems like an automatic response from dealers to just replace everything they can on a particular system, brakes? yup new rotors, heck might as well toss in some new calipers too..

$60....

that's what I spend per axle, well, once per axle since I did them.

$60 set of lifetime replacement warranty pads, they wear out, ya get new ones.

rotors? get turned lightly if needed, but haven't had to have that done yet. Still they're easy to replace on these, they're floating rotors... remove the pads & calipers, and a small bracket, they fall off. It's not that difficult of a job to do by yourself.

An hour job really, maybe two if you've never done it before and figuring it out on the way.

I've been running the lifetime warranty Autozone gold pads on all 4 corners of my Tahoe, buy them once and never spend another dollar on them again. Not sure how many sets I've put on but I've been using them for over 160K on that rig alone.

It's an easy job and for around $220 you can do all four corners with new rotors :dunno:

Oh, yea I don't plan on having them do the brakes. This should be a lot easier than the K5 for sure!

I haven't measured the rotors so don't know if they can be turned yet or not. Just trying to see if anyone saw any advantage on "upgrading" rotors/pads. I've already had to do a lot of other things lately so don't want to go overboard unnecessarily.

Just getting the better quality pad is a pretty good upgrade, I did this on the Avalanche and immediately noticed a bit better braking. We don't do a lot of towing or high speed racing with it though, so it's not THAT huge of a deal for it, but it's a nicer feeling pedal with the new pads.

I would think the slotted rotors would really only be beneficial with high speed driving and continuous braking that generates a lot of heat, a place for the gasses to escape... standard rotors and better quality pads may be fine if you're not towing or racing.

And I wasn't originally going to throw out store names, I have learned to only buy certain things from Autozone, brake pads so far have not been a problem with me through them, they last fine, work fine, warranty is great.

I agree. Just don't let the pads go metal to metal, I've heard that voids the warranty :dunno:

I had OReilly's turn my existing rotors but there was still a little rust exposed on the inner and outer edges of the back side. He couldn't turn them any more....but said he wouldn't charge me. :)

So, I stuck with new AC Delco Professional rotors ($60 ea) and then Wagner Ultraquiet pads. Work Awesome! A great upgrade and didn't break the bank!
