My 05 crew cab has had "service 4wd" coming up on the display lately. It comes on every once and a while when I am cruising down the road. Put it on a snap on scanner today and it shows no codes. I can clear it off the display just fine and it doesn't come back for a while. Only one time did it feel like something was wrong with the t-case, I left the grocery store and it kinda felt like it was stuck inbetween gears. I mean it had too much tourqe for two high and not enough for four low, when I turned off the key it made a little clunk like it was stuck and then worked fine. It has came on maybe five times in the last month. Has anyone had a similar problem or know what it may be? Just trying to figure out if I can fix it myself or how much money this is going to cost me. Thanks in advance.

Mine came on in my 03 twice a few months ago, it was a encoder motor fault. Mine prob should have a new incoder motor. I think there are 3 parts to that if i remember right. 1..dash switch 2..module 3..encoder motor on the t-case,front drive shaft has to be removed to change. Its one of those three, someone will chime in that knows a little more. Mine hadnt come on since, but ya never know.

Thanks, I'm probably going to take it to gm on my next days off if I can't get it figured out. I have called a few gm dealers and they say that it sounds like that motor in the t-case or the sensor for it. The only problem is the closest dealer is 2.5-3 hrs away and about $500 for the repair. I wish I could get the code read somewhere here before I drive all that way and end up paying twice as much as I was told on the phone. Any one else have any input on the subject?

Well, I finally took the truck to get fixed. Turns out it was the encoder motor sensor. Probably a thirty dollar sensor, but since I took it to GM it was about a hundred for the sensor and three hundred for them to change it! I probably shouldn't have even worried about it, but knowing my luck the darn t-case would have locked up solid with the wife and kiddos driving to wherever(since we live in BFE, as she calls it!) while I am at work. Oh well, gotta do what ya gotta do.............not that anybody cares, just thought I would let it be known. end rant.;)

Sounds good, can you check you receipt for the sensor part number..? I was told you cant just change that anymore, anyway let me know if you can...thanks.

Thankyou much appreciated , mine hasnt come back on for a few months but when it does and ill check that out. I know 3rd shift sux, im on the same, sux tyring to sleep...thanks again. Is yours a 2500..?

I wish it was a 3/4 ton, then it might actually pull a hill without kicking out of OD! Nope, it is a measley 1/2 ton. It works fine for hauling the fam around and going on trips though, other than the above stated.
