Quick question

Father has an '06 Dmax 4x4 CCLB with 4" lift and 35s. It can't be turned unless it's rolling a decent amount. What can be done? Trying to back up a trailer with this long beast AND no static turning ability SUCKS DONKEY KONG BALLS. :doah:

As in the tires won't actually turn on the ground, or the tires turn but the vehicle won't?

First thought is tire pressure -- under-inflated is great for off-road, gets you that fantastic traction, but turning would be miserable on the tarmac.

Second, do the tires turn an equal amount left-to-right? I've no clue how IFS lifts work, but that's right about the amount of lift where you'd need to do steering correction on a straight axle, so maybe the geometry has more force going one direction than the other?

Sounds like a bad pump,
I had one on a dmax recently where the pully had slipped off the pump.shaft, 1st time I've ever see a pressed on pully come off by itself:dunno:

sorry for the mix up

It will drive and turn beautifully at speeds above 5mph. Anything under that speed and you can really feel the steering struggle to turn the tires. The tires are inflated enough to not cause problems, meaning I have no idea what they are at but know they are prolly over 35psi.

If I need to turn the wheels, on-road, without moving....I hope I ate my Wheaties.

Sounds pretty normal to me, I'm runing 35's too, and at a dead stop it is difficult to turn the wheel. Not to mention the stress you're putting on all the steering components trying to turn the wheels without the tires moving.

You should be rolling even the slightest little bit while turning anyways, once the tires are rolling you can turn pretty quickly and make the needed adjustments.

It's a hydro-boost truck. Before you do the pump thing, try changing the power steering fluid. If you do a search over at dieselplace.com, there's a great write up(with pics). I was shocked how much better my steering got on my ol' duramax after doing it.

Fluid change fixed mine. Could not turn it on pavement sitting still. Now it is one finger.

mmm me like me like, will address this :waytogo:
