Well i kindda fell in a hole here on this 3/4 ton 10 bolt i got to match up with the 14 bolt. it just needs to much work and the rust is ridiculous. I have a awesome rebuilt front 10 bolt 6 lug already installed..SOOOO ,My question is can i change the spindles from the 3/4 ton axle over to the 1/2 ton axle making it a "fake" 3/4 ton" with 8 lug wheels with no problems?

(MAIN CONCERN) Also will the ring a pinion change over? i read the tech article but i did not notice anything said about the gearing. i already have the correct. brake rotors, calipers, lines etc.

TALKING ABOUT FRONT AXLE!:D

one axle is 10 bolt 1977 3/4 ton 4.10 GEAR
one axle(currently installed) 10 bolt 1/2 ton 1987 3.08:(GEAR(thats the reason behind all this!)

THANKS GUYS I MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO RESPOND FOR A WHILE ILL BE MOVING TO MURRAY,KY FOR COLLEGE THIS COMING MORNING SO IF YOU LIVE DOWN THERE HIT ME UP! LBL, TURKEY BAY ORV!!!

pretty sure you can get 8 lugs for the 10 bolt. But your '77 axle is a D44 I believe, might want to check. My '79 3/4 is a D44 8 lug. Not sure how ur new and old one interchange. Someone else will swoop in shortly and save the information day.

All you need to change is the caliper brackets, bearing hub/rotor assembly and calipers, everything else is the same.

Everything will swap over including the gears but the gears will have to be setup again, that's why there are shims in the first place because every housing is different.

Since you already have an 8-lug 4.10 axle, why not just freshen it up and sell your "nice" 3.08 6-lug? Setting up used gears can be tricky and they aren't always happy in another housing.

Wait, did I just say "sell a 3.08 10-bolt"? I must have meant duct tape a case of beer to it and then try to give it away.

Lol, I paid 25 bucks delivered for one because I felt sorry for the kid:doah:

i cant get pictures right now because my truck is 500 miles away but i will see if i got any and load them to see if i have a 10 bolt or dana 44. its a 1977 axle and it looked pretty close to the 10 bolt thats on my truck now but i dont know

Trying to not be like the guys on Pirate4x4, but this is a questions that gets asked about 20 times a year since this site came into existence.:doah:

Yes, if both axles are 10-bolts then you can interchange the parts....don't even need to change spindles or brake calipers. There is no "fake" in the equation as the only difference between 1/2 and 3/4 ton axles are the parts you will change. But also keep in mind that I don't believe 10-bolts existed in '77. You can still interchange hubs to get 8-lugs (might require swapping spindles) but the gears will not interchange between a 10-bolt and D44.

They were phased in during the '77 model year. I've had two of them, one with a 10bolt (3.08), and the other with a d44 (3.73).

alright then ill get a pic om labor day weekend and see if which one it is. i didnt look to hard on the front axle for the "44" which i was told was stamped onto the casting. but idk ill post some pics in a few weeks
