This is probally a stupid question but i need to know in a hurry and cant run to the shop right now. On a GM 10 bolt front differential can i swap 4.10 gears from a 3/4 ton to my 1/2 ton? are the bearings, gears, housing, everything the same? I am looking to just drop the 3/4 ton carrier and all into my axle, will it work?

Again i know this is probally mundane for you guys but chevys are new to me. I used to be a Ford guy!!!

They are interchangeable...

Probably be easier/cheaper to swap the axle housing out and put your outer stuff on it to make it 6 lug. You'll already have the axle and brake stuff already tore down anyways.. not too much work to swap the housing in beyond that.

+1

Removing the gears and setting them up in the new housing will be a ton more work than just changing from 8 to 6 lug.

Agreed just change the outers unless something is wrong with the housing to prevent that.

Agree with the above regarding swapping the entire axle and converting it back to 6-lug versus swapping just carriers/gears.

There is no difference between the gears and carriers of a 1/2 vs. 3/4 ton 10-bolt. The only difference is the 3/4 ton has 8 lug wheel hubs, rotors, and different (taller) brake caliper mounts but they are all interchangeable.

The only difference to look for with the gears and carriers of 10-bolts are the years, as around '89 they switched from 28-spline to 30-spline shafts. Again, everything is interchangeable.....if you have a 28-spline carrier you need 28-spline shaft, etc...

Solved the problem. Found a 10 bolt with 4.10s and a lockright out in the back of the shop after moving some other axles:D. thanks for the help:bow:
