1/2 ton truck with turbo 400

I believe a base model non-OD truck would have had a 400. By that year the 400 was the only 3 spd auto in production so that was the standard equipment auto. I'm not 100% sure this applies to the trucks but I know this was true of the vans, I got one of my HD case 400's from a base model Astro van. :D

The pan on it and the side view look exactly like the 2nd pic down. Here is a pic of it. Its dark and raining now i could not get any more today.

GM also used a 375 or 475. There was a post on this awhile ago. IIRC it's essnetially a 400 with a 350 output shaft. Don't hold me to it tho.

If it is a 400. It has a driver drop transfer case on it. I have a set of military 1.25 ton axles that i want to poke under it and need to replace the transfercase with one that has the correct drop and that will bolt to a 400. Is this a remove and replace with some thing like a 208 transfercase? The trans is brand new as well as the engine.

passenger side drop 241 out of a 90-91 Burb or Blazer. if you get one that was originally behind a 700R4/4L60 you'll have to swap input shafts, as the 700 version is 27 spline, and the 400 version is 32 spline. you need the 90-91 version because it has the VSS on the back of the transfer case, rather than a cable driven speedo.

i scraped a 85 or 86 c10. stock base base model non radio even. was 4.3 carbed v6 with hd case 400 2x4 all 100% stock from factory.

my buddy has an 88 1/2 ton with a 400 in it from factory. I thought it was strange too.

Certainly isn't a 700. The pan is the wrong shape. Assume it is a 400 and go from there. Sorry I cant help much with the Tcase though. I'm still learning myself.

If you are wanting a passenger side drop case a 208 or 241 should bolt in. You will need to know the spline count on the trans though. Generally Th400's are 32 spline but generally Th400's didn't come in 1/2 tons so you will probably want to check.

If you have the electric speedo then you will want to find a 241 with an electric speedo to swap in to make life easier unless you don't care about a speedo.

Trail rig dont care about the speed o meter :) But i do want it to run right so if i need it i will get it to work. I did not want to crack it open to get the spline count on the trans. Did any 400's come with the smaller spline count shafts? I got my eyes peeled for a 208 or 241 but dont want to get the wrong one. Which is stronger? Better? I know the 208 is behind a lot of military trucks that are 1 ton.

The 241 is marginally better then a 208. It has a true oil pump system were a 208 only has slingers, & it has the ability to be converted to fixed yoke output much easier then a 208. The 241 is basically an update slightly more evolved 208. The 241 also offers a slightly better lowrange of 2.72:1 as compared to 2.61:1. The downside is they are more rare & generally cost more money when you find them.

That being said though, I run a 208 with good success as do many.
