1 month to 8.1 swap, then another month to Nv4500 swap

87 V20 Burb- 6.2 Diesel to 8.1-Th400 to Nv4500 I got around a month to complete, then a 800 mile drive. and then a 2300 mile roundtrip
It’s definitely a 04+. It has the raised timing cover. I guess I’ll just hope that it is pinned the same way. My standalone harness is setup for the earlier 01/02.

Pulling the schematics up, the circuits end up in the same positions. Here they are.

Looks like you should just have to change the connector end and be set.

I was really hoping to get the balancer off today. None of my balancer tools worked. They weren’t big enough to grab the balancer, the balancer/pulley doesn’t have threaded holes to grab on and none of the threads are correct for the crank shaft bolt. I messed around with a three jaw puller but didn’t have any luck with it.

I’ll mess with it tomorrow or this week. I think I need to grind down the jaw teeth to a different angle to grab the balancer/pulley. I’m without 90% of my tools. They are all in the Suburban that’s 800 miles away.

I got the balancer/pulley off. I ended up heading to AutoZone to rent one. After going back and forth with the counter guy, I told him that I’ll just take it. He kept telling me that it wouldn’t work.

When I brought it back 20 minutes later he was smirking. “Didn’t work?” I told him the Chrysler tool worked great on my Gm motor.

I’ll a longer bolt for the install or cut up a wheel hub tool. The large bolt/shaft in the middle is the right thread and pitch. I’ll see about tearing off the pan and timing cover tonight after the kids go to bed.

There was some sludge in the base of the pan, but it looks decent inside. You can see the crosshatching on the bottom of the bore. The piston skirts look good on the ones that are exposed.

I’ll take off the windage tray, oil filter, motor mount shells, oil cooler fittings, oil pump, the main caps and a few rod caps tomorrow. I’ll also be dropping off the valve covers, oil pan and timing cover to get a decent clean at the shop. I’ve seen two different torque specs for the rods and mains, so I want to talk to my friend that’s a engine builder to just confirm.

Hmm. Torque to yield connection rod nuts. Dang it.

Called the dealer and few engine part suppliers. Gm said the nuts weren’t available. Epw parts said there were no aftermarket ones.

I found the part number online and called the dealer back. Boom. Available at $15ea. 2 days to get them. I’m just going to take two rod ends off and go from there.

more frustrations and $$

So wait...what happened with the other motor? And was there a problem with this new replacement motor that's causing you to decide to go through all this?

The Tilden Motorsports 8.1 spun a rod.

I didn’t want to use Bowman’s project motor and then replace it. So I found one to buy, and I’m just going deeper into this one to inspect it before putting it in. I just wanted to check out the two problem child rods.

The original Tilden 8.1 will hopefully be rebuildable.

Ah, that makes sense. Yeah, I bet the old one is rebuildable. Keep it for one of your other burbs

I was hoping to get to the 8.1 for the past few days, but I’ve been having to track down some electrical issues on my wife’s 91 Burb. I’m not sure what would cause so many things to all of a sudden fail, but sh*t happens.

Rats and mice issues.... I found a few chewed on wires. Esc pigtail, two plug wires and ground wire. Then still had a bad temp sensor and the gauge sender took a dump. I changed them out and then the fuel pressure was in the dumps and inconsistent. When first firing it up cold, it was around 11-12 psi, then as it warmed up it would drop to 4.5.
I’m wrapping up the fuel pump install and I need to service the transmission and inspect the trailer bearings. I’ll be hopefully using the burb to haul the replacement motor to Idaho, where I’ll be doing the swap.

Parts came in for the 8.1
High volume oil pump, connecting rod nuts(x4), t-stat, cam sensor, the wrong cps pigtail, oil pan gasket, timing cover gasket, front and rear main seals.

The oil pump didn’t come with the tube, and Melling’s catalog didn’t list the 8.1 on its application guide. I was kinda pissed off at Summit Racing’s look up. I called up Melling and was pleasantly surprised that it just needs the right pick up tube. They are physically the same and it was actually cheaper to order them individually than together. Plus, the pre-assembled one was out of stock.

The right cam sensor pigtail and pick up tube will be in tomorrow.

Dang it. Cam pigtail was wrong. It’s for the earlier sensor. I went to the standard ignition website and plugged in the cam sensor part number and it showed the related pigtail number. I’ll order it tomorrow and return the other one.

Good news, the oil pick up tube came in and it appears that the 91v10 burb is fixed. The ignition control module did it.

Update on Project 8.1 re-swap.

The family and I took the 800 mile one way trip up to Mountain Home Idaho. I got all the bugs worked out on the tbi burb, just to have the speedo stop working when I passed threw Colfax Ca. I popped in the lockup key into the obd port and kept going.

Made it to Mountain Home Idaho Wednesday evening and started on the project. The shop was extremely busy with finishing up other projects and competitor rigs. I worked on it Thursday Friday and Sunday. Sunday evening was a mad dash. I got it back together and forgot to plug the main relays back in. A few minutes later, it was noticed.

I plugged it all in and heard everything power up. Hit the key and immediately was greeted with a giant back fire and no start. Cam sensor code, image that. After confirming that the new connector wiring was good, I swapped the original cam position sensor back in and it purred to life.

Oil change, fresh oil pan gasket and timing cover gasket, new spark plugs, everything else got swapped from the old 8.1. I got it all done Sunday evening and drove it and the wife drove hers back the 800 mile route home.

That's awesome and impressive Jordan! It was good seeing you over the weekend too. And your wife's burb is freaking mint dude!

So glad you were able to get it running again and it made the trip back home safe. Glad there's another 8.1 running in the burb again
