1 month to 8.1 swap, then another month to Nv4500 swap

87 V20 Burb- 6.2 Diesel to 8.1-Th400 to Nv4500 I got around a month to complete, then a 800 mile drive. and then a 2300 mile roundtrip
I should start a new thread for the K5.

The 8.1 is running great. Not much to report. I’m scratching away at my debt for my equipment school, so I haven’t had any extra cash. I’m about 8 months out from squaring up on the loan, and I need to get the K5 paid off.

I had the option to buy or flip the blazer and split it with my buddy. Needless to say, I’ve decided to keep it, unless someone comes up with a amazing offer. Until then, I’ll keep tinkering and fixing it up. I’m on a serious almost non existent budget on this one.

Today I dismounted 5, 24 bolt H1’s and one 8 bolt H1. I found 3 out of 4 o ring seals for the split rim and some extra hardware. I need to get 1 more o ring, valve stems and inserts. I made sure the spacers would work and fully mounted one 24 bolt rim with a o ring and valve stem onto a mtr.

heck of a day for the Milwaukee batteries to take a dump.

while I was waiting on batteries that were never going to charge, I swapped a input shaft into a friends 205.

Ever since I did the re-swap it’s sounded like my power steering pump was failing. It would howl when turning or braking. The fluid is clean and full.

Yesterday I swapped the two return hoses and no more sounds or heavy steering! When I swapped it at first, it took 20 minutes just to bleed the system. I asked my squarebody bud if the two return lines needed to be swapped and he said it didn’t matter. I’m glad I swapped them.

what do you mean swap? i noticed 2 returns and 1 pressure. well 1 of each to gearbox but what about 2nd return...where does that go?
Hyrdoboost brake booster.

For what it's worth, I've noticed there's only flow out the return from the hydroboost when you're using the brakes. Maybe that has something to do with it.

If I'm seeing it correctly, it looks like you have the return from the hydroboost on the side and the steering is on the back. That's how mine was from the factory.

Bingo

What a wiring nightmare... I’ll be sending the two harness’s off hopefully next week. We shall see what happens.

Wow. It’s been a minute since I’ve posted last.

sorry guys and gals. I sold it.

Jk. Never! I started a new job that’s physically more demanding and longer hours. I have been slacking.

let’s see. So the engine harnesses were a bust. The guy was too busy to get to them so they are actually still sitting in the box ready to ship out. I’m in no rush.

The 8.1 is still chugging along. I’m actually sending out another ecu because at low rpm and under a load, the motor has been pinging. I scored about 25 ls Ecu’s, so I can keep driving mine until the replacement comes.

I’ve also been dealing with Nv4500 problems. In December, my transmission started gear blocking and experiencing clutch drag. I flushed the fluid out for fresh Gm spec fluid and also flushed and bled the hydraulics. No change.

So the transmission had to come out. Upon removal, the 5th gear nut was loose, the collar spacer was damaged from the loose nut and my pressure plate fingers were sitting there uneven. A quick call to my transmission guy, and we discussed putting a new collar spacer, retainer nut, new clutch kit, turn the flywheel and possibly look into the later style shifter top plate for easier installation and removal.

fast forward a few months and it’s back together. Still having issues. Growling sounds, knocking sounds and 4th gear grinds during up and downshift. Wtf. Another call and it looks like it will come back out and get a full tear down and rebuild. Fml.

Meanwhile

I recently took our annual trip up to northern Idaho for out Mt Havoc competition. I just dealt with the transmission. 2500 miles hauling our 21ft trailer. 8.2 mpg.

Great update. Been wondering how another 8.1 brother was doing. Heck of a score on the pcms and hydro clutch parts too. Mileage isn't shabby with the trailer.
