I'm about 1/2 way through the rebuild process. Billavista's article on Pirate was a good resource. Of note, a ball joint press helps a great deal with lower kingpin seat R&R. In my case the upper nylon bushing was very worn and the kingpin was pitted and galled. The lower bearing was shot but not as badly as the upper.
As for the kingpin removal - what a pain. I purchased a long arm 7/8 hex key and still needed a 6' cheater bar. 4' would not cut it. Thank goodness this is a west coast rig and not corroded.

I'm assuming you have the kingpin torqued to the proper spec of 600 ft/lbs ?

not everyone has a torque wrench capable of reading that high. just make it tighter then hell and 1/2 more turn.

Well, i do agree that not everyone has a torque wrench large enough for the job but if you don't then there is always someone who does that could torque it for you. I would hate to have a kingpin come loose because it wasn't torqued to spec and then have it ruin the C on the axle tube and be left wondering how i was going to fix that problem. It is much cheaper to find someone with the proper tool to torque it rather than "guessing" that it's "tight enough".

I guess maybe i'm just weird this way but if i need a tool for a job i just go buy the tool. I would definately have a hard time spending the 700.00 for a new one from Snap-on so i would shop around for a deal (got mine used on e-bay for 142.00 delivered to my door then had it calibrated).

fyi for big tourqe wrench.

any big semi truck shop that does tires should have 1. most semi truck stuff is 450ft-550ft tourqe spec. and thay are 3/4 or 1" drive units so keep that inmind.

Could probably rent one from a equipment rental shop.

I have it tightened with a 6' cheater bar and locktight blue. It's tighter than the old one was.

Freezing bearing races

The lower kingpin race stalled my press. So I reverted to freezing it and it tapped in with two hits. Nice!

The farther I get into the D60 the more maintenance items I find. I'm on to (2) new u-joints and axle seals as well. Hopefully there are no additional surprises lurking in the pumpkin when I open that up....

Kingpins have been completed on both sides. The axle shafts have been disassembled and are ready for machining - full circle clips. Both u-joints were completely dry and worn out.

Did I mention that the lower kingpin races are a pain? Freezing, BFH were the only way to get them in.

All done. Tally:

  • Full kingpin rebuild kit
  • New Spicer greasable u-joints
  • Axle shafts machined for full circle snap rings and seal surface polished
  • New inner axle seals
  • D60 cover gasket and lube
Oh yeah, I found a posi diff just after buttoning it all up...:doah:
