Anybody ever installed a 1 ton power steering pump on a Blazer? Someone told me that it was a good upgrade, but I don't even know if they're different pumps. Anyone have any insight on this?

I dont think it would be an upgrade.I run a stock un modded K5 pump and it provides more than enough flow and pressure to run my hydroboost and hydro assist :D

Thats on a 2nd gen dodge. Chevys are all the same. I checked the part number when I was bored working at advance one day.

There is no inherent difference between a 1 ton, 3/4 or 1/2 ton pump.

Any truck that had "hydroboost" brakes (most 1 ton trucks, all of the diesel trucks) had a little different pump setup, it had a remote reservoir. The pump itself was the same.

There were some slight variances in pressure and flow developed by the pumps but by this point who knows. None of the stock pumps will be developing peak numbers after 20 years of use and who knows what the rebuild companies are putting together.

Here's some reading on Saginaw pumps
(it's about 1/5 of the way down the page).

2x on the pumps proper being identical.

However, for the record, some hydroboost pump units had the same reservoir (i.e. no remote tank) as the regular pumps, just with a second return fitting on the reservoir.

So, yeah, a "1-ton" steering pump won't do anything different than a "1/2-ton" ... though hydroboost brakes are a good upgrade. (Mind you, such an upgrade does require a bunch of parts swapping...)
