<font color="green"> A 12 bolt is marginally stronger than a 10 bolt, but it's not anything to write home about. The weight difference is negligable too, I'd say it can't be much more than 30 lbs heavier, if that. The 14 bolt, on the other hand, must weigh twice what the 10 or 12 bolts weigh, at least with the drums on it. With discs it's still probably 150 or so lbs heavier. </font color>
my neighbor works for GM as a repair rep or something and said the new H2's have a 12 bolt. Haven't seen it myself but he's probly reliable
I have two 1980 1/2 ton trucks with 12-bolt rears, factory. They are only considered 1/2ton, not 3/4. None had factory rear disc brakes. I believe GM went to 10-bolt rears in 1981-82. I ran 35" tires on a 12-bolt for quite awhile, with the factory limited slip, and never had a problem with it. However, I do intend to play harder, I just swapped in a 14-bolt rear.

<font color="green"> The 12 bolts are 1/2 ton axles, GM stopped making them in about '80 but they can be found in trucks as late as '82s. After that they were replaced with the 10 bolt. Newest thing they're in would be late 70s early 80s pickups, and none of them came with discs, although there are kits made to convert them.
I really doubt that the H2 has a 12 bolt in it, since they haven't been made in over 20 years. I've got it on good authority that those H2s are actually based on a reguilar 1/2 ton truck, not the 3/4 ton as was originally reported by the media. I'm still waiting for pics from a real world H2, not a press model. </font color>

For the H2, based on the specs I have seen the rear axle is basically a 9.5" 14-bolt semi-floater.
For the 10 to 12 bolt swap, I guess if you need a new rear axle and want an easy swap than it would be a good idea. Just as Shaggy stated, a 12-bolt is just slightly stronger than the 10-bolt. The 12 does seem to hold up okay for moderate useage.
