Trying to change the axle bearing on my 10 bolt. Got the ole slide hammer out, rammed it back and the bearing shattered. All that's left in the housing is a ring of the old bearing. Soaked it in penetrating oil, still won't come out. Torched it with a propane torch, still won't come out. Any suggestions would be great.

I took a Dremel tool to mine on the 2wd Burb I had last year, got in there carefully, started cutting the outter race away far enough to not go all the way through, but very close, then take a chisel and hammer on it, it'll crack where you cut, releases the tightness and nearly falls right out.

If you have a welder (arc or mig) you can run 3 short beads across the race's inside diameter and after they cool, the race shrinks enough to let you remove it easily..you can cut a slot in it with a torch too,the hard bearing race will melt faster than the axle housing, but you'll risk getting some slag in the tubes,if I use a torch I put the tip on the inside and blow the sparks out if possible..or stuff a wet rag in the axle tube..

One guy I know had the same problem as you,he used a can of A/C freon to "freeze" the race, and it shrunk it enough to allow his slide hammer to get it out..

You can use a chisel to crack the race too,but be ready for shards to come flying out, wear goggles and gloves if you try that...

Got it. Father in law brought over the oxy\acy torch. Got it red hot, chisel and hammer. Ba-bing.
