I checked at all local auto parts stores and no one had this part,or even knew the size.....I just need the fitting that threads into the axle.I can deal w the breather tube..does anyone know what size those are? I was thinking if I can't find the fitting I can at least find the thread size and take it from there. Thanks all

from what ive seen they r pressed in..atleast in my old 10bolt and my D60. (both front axles) and while the cover was off i tapped in a 3/8-16 tap and just threaded in a brass barb and clamped a rubber line onto that. works great.

Well, when I say "threaded", I in fact don't mean "threaded." :doah: Turns out it's concentric rings, which when covered in oil and dirt, to the untrained eye look a lot LIKE threads:

Major diameter is a bit short of .450", so it's not 1/8 NPT or 1/4 NPT, donno what the heck it is.

JB welding something in place prolly makes sense. The spiffy solution would be, the next time you've got the diff cover off, drilling it out and tapping it for something normal like 1/4 NPT.

I have always run a 1/8" NPT tap down them because the hole is borderline perfect ID for the tap already. Then I just thread in a brass nipple and everyone's happy, and you can get new fittings anywhere.

Probably more watertight that way too. I run a length of vacuum line up to the top of the firewall, loop it a couple ties, zip tie it in place, and stick a fuel filter for a lawnmower or something on there (you can find them at WalMart or anywhere, they're plastic and have a 1/8" hose nipple). Did the same thing with the breather on top of my th350.

DIY4x sells some spiffy aluminum breather filters. There's also a balloon-type thing you can get from ATV dealers.

Some day I'd like to run a regulator off my on board air and pressurize all the breathers with something like 1-2 psi.

Pressurize the diffs to keep water out? It's like NBC protection for your gear oil! :D

I didn't actually try the 1/8" pipe tap, raining outside, so I'll take your word for it. Does a 1/8" pipe thread brass fitting go in nice and tight?

Yup. I wouldn't be surprised that whatever cuts that hole for the pressed fitting is also cutting holes for 1/8"NPT taps on something else. Just remember NPT is a tapered thread, so don't get all willy-nilly and run that tap down there super far. It's only like 2 or 3 full rotations on a fitting that small.

I went to west coast diff and they gave me a plasic fitting that has a little white breather cap to eliminate the hose.it IS pressed in style.......

i try not to assume but i assume that west coast diff knows what the fitting they gave u is capable of. is it specifically made to go into a diff. to eliminate the hose?

Well, it's not like the diff housing should get all that hot; lots of ventilation and the engine isn't too close.

Of course it's no good for the guys that play U-Boat Commander with their trucks, but these are the guys who run vent lines to the top of the cab :haha:

ya,i would be scared to go through a puddle with a breather sitting on top of my diff

Oh, it's not like it'll splash in there, and one drop of water won't make the diff suddenly seize up. I mean, you'll get that much condensation in there through an open vent -- air carries water, you know. It's when the water displaces the gear oil that you run into trouble.

One of the many reasons I don't do deep-water crossings. (Another is that the truck doesn't run most of the time  )
