hey there, saw a 72 gmc swb 4x4 project truck for sale, and i had a few questions. its a short wheel base but it has cab lights, badges for a 396 and has 8 lug axles. now the axles i could see someone swapping in since this is a builder truck, but my dad went and looked at it and he said the rear is a 10 bolt, did they ever make a rear 8 lug 10 bolt? and did the make a short wheel base with these options back in those years? just wondering i know pics help and i will try and get some but any help would be great.

no 10 bolt 8 lug rear i've ever seen, but, 3/4 ton front axle is 10 bolt front, if its a dana pattern it has 10 bolts in the cover, maybe a d60, need a pic of cover and hub area where lug nuts are

Good axle but parts are rare and hard to find. If it's in good shape it's a good axle to have.

All SWB pickups have been half tons. To the best of my knowledge, GM never put a big block in a half ton 4x4 pickup. IIRC in 1972, the biggest engine from the factory in a SWB 4x4 was a 350.

Sounds like a nice truck, though!

i saw a swb 4x4 half ton in wyoming when i was there with 454 badges and 3/4 ton running gear and cab lights, but like you said they didnt offer it so im thinking it was all added, but as for the eaton, whats its compatible to for toughness? 14b? 60? 70? or maybe just a 12b?

14b out of sheer brute strength. The axleshafts are beeg but only 19 spline but they do have a reputation for toughness. However as soon as something breaks it'd be time to get a 14FF.
