Are 10 bolt and 12 bolt axle shafts interchangable? Are they the same length from side to side? A friend of mine has an '84 K5 with a 10 bolt and needs a new shaft and we need to know what trucks we can get one from for when we go shopping.

12 bolts have 30 spline shafts and 10 bolts (prior to 1989 or so) have 28 spline shafts so no it will not work in your case. A 12 bolt shaft will work in a 30 spline 10 bolt with a slight modification.
