Does anyone know if the axle shafts are same or differant between the 10 bolt and 12 bolt differentails?

All 12-bolts had 30-spline shafts. Earlier 10-bolts had 28-spline shafts, than around '88-'89 the 10-bolts switched to 30-spline shafts also.......but I don't know if they interchange. You should be able to do a little research and find aftermarket axle companies that list dimensions on the website.

As was said already the 12 bolt axles are all 30 spline and the 10 bolts were 28 spline up until 1988 then in 1989 they were changed to 30 spline. Also IIRC the pressure angle of the splines are different between the 10 and 12 bolt axles.

From this information doen't look like I will be able to use one axle shaft in my new 12 bolt rear differentail. I will try when it comes apart to answer my own question since it's a 1990 10 bolt it may have 30 spline but differant angle...

How about backing plates? Anyone know if the backing plate with brakes will bolt on the 12 bolt diff?

Just trying to figure this out ahead of the work as the 1990 2wd Suburban came with a 10 bolt. It has lots of backlash!!! Lots!!! the truck is in amazing condition and used for towing since new so not surprised with the wear. I always use a weight distribution hitch.

I have a 12 bolt 3:73 rear axle with six lug and a 12 bolt with five lug but one of the five lug shafts is damaged/worn so I though the 10 bolt may fit...

Instead of rebuilding the 10 bolt I am going to use the 12 bolt differentail.

Can't find a 12 bolt five lug with 3:73 gears for towing. Maybe they were never made?

they were made, i have a 12 bolt 3.73 6 lugger as well. try and find another 5 lug rear and swap the gears in maybe? That, or if your towing heavy loads, to a semifloater 15 bolt 5x5 lug from a 454ss truck :D

Finding one of those without the truck would be a miricle!

Well I am set for the change except one five lug axle from the 12 bolt is damaged from a bearing failure. So the only thing I need is a five lug 12 bolt axle. That's why I asked if the 10 bolt would interchange. thought I may be lucky and it would be like a dana 30, daan 44 axle interchange...

Not sure if they can do it where you live but here our local crankshaft grinder can weld the axle back up and re-machine the axle surface to accept a new factory bearing.

Not sure anyone around here has that talent? But I think an axle will be an easy find.

you can always get a new shaft for it.call up randys or maybe even summit would be able to get you a new shaft.pretty sure 10 bolt wonrt fit in a 12 bolt as the bearings were offset differently.the diameter is pretty close though.i wouldnt trust putting a axle that dowsnt belong in there to last and stay in place.id hate to lose the shaft goin down the highway.:eek1:
