This question is about c-clip "nub" size.
I need to replace a bent axle in my 91 1/2 ton Sub. So far I've purchased 2 shafts from reputable vendors. A Superior Axle from Summint and another from Napa. Neither fit the cross-shaft, too long.
The Superior shaft seemed to fit until I went to re-install the cross-shaft and it was tight. I could get it started but decided against forcing it and returned it.
I didn't measure the Superior shaft as I was too angry. I was certain I could visually see the difference.
The shaft in my truck measures 0.246 (Call it 1/4 inch?) on the nub and the cross-shaft slides right in. The Napa shaft I picked up tonight is .275. I have not attempted to install it as we need the vehicle this week, but 0.019 inch seems like it will be tight.
I even went to pick-N-Pull and grabed a shaft from a 90 Sub, but it was 28 spline:confused:
I need help on what to look for. Every vendor seems to list the same thing for my vehicle, 8.5 inch-30spline-.3125 length. In my line of work, .020 is a big difference in tolerance and I don't think a diff runs with interference fit. So, correct me if I'm wrong.
I could have swapped in a 14b by now:haha:But, this is just a DD on 31s used to tote my little 6X12 and a couple dirtbikes around, so I kinda want to keep in low-budget and just get the axle fixed so it don't shake on the highway.
