Will my 30 spline carrier from a 10b front work in an 88-98 10 bolt rear?

I'd like to hear an answer to this as well. Been curious for quite some time if anything changed with the new stuff. I know the housing itself is cast a bit different, at least externally, not sure what year that started.

Anyways, are you trying to fix a newer truck with this carrier? I know some GM vehicles used a tone ring on the rear carrier, if putting an old carrier in a new axle with tone ring, I'd say no, it won't work.

It sure will. It also fits into earlier 28 spline 10 bolts. My friend just took his old 30 spline 3.42 carrier and put it into a 28 spline rear. Then took the 28 spline rear and put it into a 30 spline front. Either way they interchange front or rear. They were all standard rotation and physically same size. I do not remember carrier breaks for different gears though. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

I was just going to post this exact question! /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I am looking on building a 8.5" 30spl. 10-bolt for my s10. I can get a 28spl. 10-bolt for free...I just want the extra strength of 30spl. I am going to cut down the axle, weld on some 9" ends, and use some custom axle shafts. Should be plenty strong for a s10 /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

I just looked up the carrier bearings and they are the same for rear 28 and 30 spline diff's.

So they are interchangable? You have seen it done?

I'm going to try and pick up the axle next weekend. I am then going to take it appart and measure EVERYTHING on it for reference before I start modifying it /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif
