i searched the site and couldnt find anything,i dont even no if this is possible, but im trying to figure out what year my 8 lug 10 bolt is by cast numbers so i can figure out if its a 28 or 30 spline. its my DD and i really dont wanna rip it all apart just to count the splines, put it all back together and rip it apart again to fix it. i just want to have 4wd for the winter and dont have enough $$ to finish the rest of my 60. on the lower driver side it says "GM1" and lower pass. side it has "458856". is possible to figure the year out by this?

You need to find the BOM number which will tell you the year, axle ratio, and if it is an open carrier or some form of locked differential. This however is only assuming it has never been into and someone swapping parts around. I can say that 1989-1991 was a 30 spline axle so pulling the diff cover and checking the date code on the gears (once again assuming they are factory) should give you the year of the "gears" but they could have been 1988 gears put into an 1989-later axle. The only POSITIVE way to figure it out is to pull an axle and count the splines.

o awesome, i never knew about the date on the ring gear, and they're sadly 3.73s (dont worry, i got 5.13s/detroit in my room for my 14bff) so im 99.9% sure they r the original gears. ill check that out tomorrow, thanks a lot guys!

That 10 bolt isn't going to like 5.13's. In a 10 bolt the pinion gear is very small at 5.13 and will eventually break. You better keep an eye open for a good deal on a D60 front.

In fact Greg72 is going to have a D60 axle for sale soon and he's in NH so it's probably close enough to you if the "deal" is good enough for you.

ya,dont worry,i wouldnt ever put any money into a 10bolt. i have a 60 in my garage, i just need to get enough money to finish it (gears/locker) and all the other stuff that is going to go along with it (x-over/highsteer/hydro assist) i havent put in my 5.13s and detroit i have in my 14bff yet because i want to keep it 4wd for this winter. but come spring, if the 60 still isnt built im gonna throw them in along with a 465 and be 2wd for a while. thanks though! im sure someone i no would want gregs 60.

ok,so i took off my cover and found numbers...i see "1 GM 3988517 11 41 9 78" and i no what the "41 9" means, but im lost on what the others mean. anyone know?:doah:my guess would be 3/9/1988?

The GM 3988517 is the part number, 11 is the tooth count on the pinion gear, 41 is the tooth count on the ring gear (3.73's), 9 is the month (September) and 78 is the year (1978). So you have a 1978, 28 spline 10 bolt with 3.73 gears.
